do you pick courses on your own or do you get to consolidate your advisor? how would know what would be the best courses to take for your major and minor if you already know what you want to major and minor in (biochem and creative writing, respectively, for me).

you are on registration hold until you either meet with your advisor or have a phone conversation. If you know what you want to major, go to the dept website or look in the booklet that you will get sometime soon that has all of the majors and it lists what courses are appropriate for freshman to take. If you want to do biochem, take like chem 101 (or whatever level is appropriate), chem 053 (lab), a writing seminar (this is required for the college no matter what major), maybe bio 101/121 if you think you want two lab sciences your first semester, and whatever else interests you, take a cool freshman seminar or anything you like. Basically, aside from 1/2 courses from your major, anything you take will be fine since it will fill requirements anyway, so take what looks interesting

To be quite honest, and this is what the advisors will tell you too -- just have fun your first year and take what sounds interesting. Take absolute requirements like Writing Seminars as early as you can, but other than that, don't worry about majors/minors and all that until sophomore year, in my opinion. People change their minds so much (cliche but true) and so it's best to explore your interests. If you're absolutely sure what you want to do though, then of course you can focus in on that and check out the various websites to see what is required for the major/minor, but try to have fun with other things too if you can help it :P

Never mind this.
