Does submitting the advanced enrollment deposit ($250), along with a request for the housing app and signing up for an orientation (the 3-step process outlined in the admissions booklet) commit you to MSU? At what point are you considered "committed"/How do you formally commit? Also, if you inadvertently commit yourself, can you uncommit?

I would say that signing up for orientation definitely says you are going to MSU because orientation is where you pick out classes, get your ID and get ton of info. The signing up for a room keeps some other kid from having one so make up your mind as soon as possible.

You can definitely uncommit. It is refundable until May 1st. If you are unsure about attending MSU but it is, say, in your top 2, then it is intelligent to send out your deposit so just incase you decide to go there you have a good orientation date. I got this info from the James Madison admissions counselor, it was the advice she gave me because I was/am still unsure as to where I want to go, and if I end up at MSU I don't want crappy classes because I signed up for orientation late. Just remember, you can get out of anything by May 1st, just make sure you tell them if you aren't going if you choose to not.

Ya modo is right.

The deposit you payed is refundable up until May 1st. Attending your orientation is basically you telling MSU that you are committing. If you don't attend your AOP, they just assume you are no longer interested in going to the school and cancel your admission.
