I know it's hard. That's what everyone's saying.

So, i'm hoping someone here on CC took it (and assuming all of you took the actual chem class, since it's a requirement), and hoping maybe one of you could tell me what it covers that's not on the Chem AP?

You'll want to go through the book Chemical Principles - The Quest for Insight (ISBN 071675701X). This is what's recommended for preparation. That said, if there are any upperclassmen wishing to rid themselves of it, I still need to get a copy of this book ><

I hate the Chemical Principles book (we used it for AP). I think I hated it because half the info in the book wasn't on the AP, but I guess when I take 5.111, it'll be necessary to learn all the info they put in there. What sucks is I was looking for something to review for the AP test, and supplemental lessons for my tests in class, and they barely put the 5.111 and 5.112 OCW stuff online.

I took the test and know three other people who did as well. First of all I'll tell you that if you're not really serious about taking it then there's really no point in doing so. It's very early in the morning (at least when I took it) and very difficult. If you're the kind of kid who's gonna pick partying with new friends over getting a good night sleep and a little studying for the test the next day then I'd say taking the test may just not be worth it (I chose the former and failed the test spectacularly with a booming headache the whole way through).

Beyond those of you who like me probably shouldn't have even been taking the test, I know a girl who read the whole Chemical Principles book before the test. Even she couldn't pass it. You'll see how this is possible after taking 5.111 or 5.112 when you get to MIT. Pretty much the second half of both the classes are independent of the book (I'd suggest looking at the class sites to see what exactly their about). From what I heard only 1 out of the probably 60 kids taking the test that day passed.

For all I know you could be the one who passes. My suggestion would be to sign up for the test and not really worry about the obligation of going and taking it. If the day comes around and you still feel like you should/want/are prepared to take the test, then take it. Just really don't worry about it cause really smart people do really bad on this test (it's basically made to prevent people from getting advanced placement).

Anecdotal story about that test. My son took both honors and AP Chem and hoped he would at least not embarass himself on that test. He said most of the test takers left before the test was over, some near the beginning. He stuck it out until the bitter end. And he really liked his chemistry class first semester.

My question is not based specifically on Chemistry ASE, but rather on 8.01 and 18.01 ASE's- Are these ASE's similar to the final exams of the subjects available on OCW?? I mean not only the matter covered, but also the structure of the questions...

texas137, did the person you know who passed the test use the Zumdahl book that some high schools use for the Chem AP test (i think it's just called Chemistry)? thanks!

yes, that's the one. He didn't take a class, he just self studied from that book for both the AP and for MIT's ASE exams.
