Advanced Standing Examinations

Can anyone explain how these work for incoming freshman? Where would I find the syllabuses for the math and physics exams? Are the syllabuses the same as the class syllabus? How difficult are these exams?

If i take a course like 18.01 during the summer at the local community college, do i have to take it at MIT?

the syllabus are not the as high school classes the 8.01 advancestanding has fluid mechanics which isnt in ap physics or most physics class as well as most other classes unless you go to stuy. Math at Community college might give you credit but i highly doubt it most likely have to take advance standing exam. Hass and Chem classes are a lot harder to place out of , wait i think you cant place out of hass classes.

What about the Chemistry and Biology Advanced Standing Exams? How hard are these exams, and does anyone know the format? i.e. structured questions, or multiple choice?

chem is supposed to be hard with a low passing rate

18.01... is Calc BC, right? You'll need to have taken the AP exam to get credit; I don't believe MIT takes community college transfers. Alternatively, you can take it, and study to test out. Or you can just take 18.01/2 A, which gets you into 18.03 second semester, same as if you'd placed out.

Chem is ridiculously hard. I made the mistake of taking 5.112 my frosh year after not testing out, and well, supposedly some of the material my TA learned while going for his chem masters. You can try, sure, but I wouldn't waste too much time studying for it (I personally think it's better if you take the class anyway; at the least, 3.091 is supposed to be good).
