Advanced Standing Exams

Hey so does anyone know anything about the difficulty of the advanced standing exams? I took AP chemistry and only got a 4, so was thinking of studying chemistry over the summer and taking the departmental exams. Also looking into the ones for Math, Physics and computer science.

Any information would be appreciated!

I’m pretty sure they say on the site not to take an advanced standing exam if you didn’t get the AP credit so I wouldn’t do chem. If you haven’t taken math, physics, comp sci. then you should give it a try.

That’s for Physics I think, Chemistry I read you could. And I’m looking into taking the comp sci one especially.

unforgivenhero, you’re correct. Apart from physics, you are allowed to take the department exam for math and chem (Math 1920, Chem 2070/90, and Chem 2080). You will need roughly a 70% or higher to pass and taking the CASE is arguably easier than taking the entire course.

Are you looking just to get credit for the class or placement into a higher level? I’m sure you’ve heard it before, but be careful about placing into higher level classes (especially if you’re planning on doing so for multiple subjects). The classes may end up being alot harder than you may expect - just because you passed the placement exam or got a good score on the AP doesn’t mean that you’ll also do well in a higher level college class. Don’t overload yourself too much your first semester!
