Hello, I was wondering if anyone can answer this question about Advanced Standing at Harvard.

Suppose I graduate from high school with not 4 AP credits, but say 3 and a half. Can I make up for the last half of a credit by taking extra courses, or by completing summer courses? Would this allow me to be qualified for advanced standing?

Thanks.

bump... does anyone have any idea?

I remember somewhere on the Harvard web site EXACTLY what the requirements are for Advanced Standing. This page [which I wish I had a link for, sorry] listed all the AP courses for which credit would be given and those that would not. If you need 1/2 more AP credit, look down the list to see what semester courses Harvard will accept [if you score a 5]. The problem is, AP tests are only given once a year, so if you're a senior you can't just "take a course in the summer" and have Harvard accept that.

I mean like, is it possible to combine "advanced standing credits" with regular college credit, to reach the 4 credits necessary?

LOOK IT UP:

(I admit, this link, which I have seen before in an earlier annual version, is not as easy to drill down to on Harvard's Web site as it ought to be for such a frequently asked question. I finally used Harvard's Web site search to get an OLD version of the document, and then hacked off the end of that URL to get a department page that lead me to the current document.)

Tokenadult, thanks for finding the link. This is the web page I was referring to earlier. I guess I found it before by dumb luck. Anyway, the requirements are fairly straight forward and should answer zas1987's questions.

Zas-I know this doesn't really answer your question, but what makes you think you would want advanced standing anyway? From reading the various web sites/mailings, it seems like something Harvard really does NOT encourage.

Almost everybody who is eligible "accepts" Advanced Standing during the first-year. There is no downside to doing so, since you can "rescind" it at any time and graduate in four years. You need 4 AP credits and cannot make up any deficit by taking summer courses.
