Advantage for In-State Applicants or Not?

Hey, everyone! I'm from NH and I applied to Dartmouth, as well as many more schools. I'm just curious as to whether you think or know whether students from NH have a better shot at getting in; I've heard it from several people but I'm not sure how true it is. I know it's a private school, not public, but I was just curious, so let me know what you guys think!

I have the impression that some elite schools look upon residents of their state with a kinder eye than the general population. Rumor does indeed have it that D is one of them. At the same time, there are schools, such as Pomona, that are reportedly a tougher admit for instate students.

Whether it is true, I cannot say. I suppose that one could figure it out with an in-depth analysis of the admissions statistics by state, but that info is not available to the public.

Just knowing the average acceptance rate of New Hampshire residents at Dartmouth is probably not enough. You would also have to factor in how many were children of faculty, employees, and alumni that settled in NH after graduation. This usually skews the data for many of the Ivies but would obviously have a bigger impact at a place like Dartmouth which is relatively isolated and in a small state population-wise.

I think you’d have to know if they have “favorite” high schools- and then some additional hs identified that they are itching to include.

Falcon1, that’s what I meant by “in depth” analysis. :)

Well, you’d also have to know what % of each state’s college-age students had applicants to Dartmouth in the first place. This mistake is made time and time again on CC, and it’s really frustrating. Dartmouth may have a greater-than-expected % of its admits from New Hampshire, but that could be consistent with a) a lower admission rate for NH’ers, b) an “even steven” admission rate for NH’ers, or c) a preference / higher admission rate for NH’ers. It all turns out on how overrepresented NH is in the admissions pool in the first place.

An analysis that bclintonk and I did together shows that Dartmouth, and indeed all the Ivies, skews heavily to the northeast, so it’s very likely that NH’ers are overrepresented, but that means nothing in and of itself.
