advantage?

I noticed that this has not been said on CC
but what are all the URM's
ex. African Americans, Hispanics...but aren't some asians considered URM's too? like indonesian or philipino

also...what is all this talk about first generation? what kind of advantage does that hold?

There are schools where Asians are considered URMs, schools that don’t attract many Asian students. Not the ones typically discussed here. Any school with less than 5% Asians will give them a boost.

Colleges lump all Asians in one category. A few will go out of their way to make sure they have reresentation from different countries, but not many have that luxury.

First gen means your parents did not attend college. It’s a boost, or tip factor at some schools meaning a student from a less educated, lower income family who has the same stats as an affluent student would get the nod.

what about ivy league? do they lump all the asians together?

^Yes, and that generally includes Filipino (those technically, Filipino’s are Pacific Islanders). Their racial breakdowns are pretty crude (black, white, native american, asian/pacific islander), at least according to the information they provide to websites that provide those breakdowns.

Exactly. You are evaluated in light of your environment, so someone who has done extradinary things considering a less-than-ideal home environment is more desirable than someone who has accomplished similar things without much effort.

The ivy league schools get so man applicants from Asians that it especially competitive for Asian applicants. However, they get enough applicants to get a good distribution of Asians from many countries.

ahh thanks :)

any more comments?
