Advantages/Disadvantages to a quarter system?

itla_uno: I see...quarter classes here are usually 4-5 units each. It works out.

kunfuzed101: Not sure about the average, but for my school, a regular quarter class usually meets about 4-5 hours a week...

Again, that depends on schools.

At Northwestern, 1 class = 1 credit in most cases; some music instrument classes are 0.5-credit. Orgo + lab = ONE credit depsite how it feels like it worths at least 2 classes!!! The orgo lab is incorprated into the orgo credit. Most science/engineering classes meet 3x/week. Languages classes meet more often but it's still one-unit. Life isn't fair. :D

At Stanford, most count 3-4 units but some are 5-unit or 2-unit.

It all depends on the school. Honestly I don't really think it matters which system your school is on, until you start looking at schools that have mandatory summer terms (I don't think most quarter systems do).

Most classes at my school are worth 3 credits and meet 3 hours a week. If you have something like a science class with lectures and recitations, or a studio art class that meets 6 hours a week, it might be 4 credits instead. Graduation requirements are set up so that you pretty much take 5 classes each term (about 15 credits). You have to be taking at least 12 credits (4 classes) to be counted as a full-times student, and the max is 20 credits, which translates into six classes.

I always hear about people having papers and whatnot assigned over spring break, or taking break 2 weeks before their finals. As of about 8pm tomorrow, I will have 1.5 weeks of spring break and absolutely nothing academic to do. :D

My school's quarter system is exactly like a semester system but broken up into three chunks instead of just two.

Labs (like Chem, Biology, etc), music ensembles, and private lessons are generally worth 1 hour. A select few main (our Intro Engineering, some Chemistry, etc) and various other courses are worth 2 hours. Most main courses (like Math, Science, Business, etc) are worth 3 hours.

Oh, and the maximum hours a student can take here during a quarter without special permission is 12.

As for how long they meet, labs are around 4 hours long and meet once a week, 2 hour courses meet twice for an hour and fifteen minutes, and 3 hour courses either meet three times a week for an hour and fifteen minutes or twice a week for an hour and fifty minutes.

I hope it helps a little to see another perspective/system.

At Dartmouth, all classes are worth 1 credit. Usually students take 3 classes per term, but you are allowed to take 2 2-class terms and 2 4-class terms. I could not begin to imagine taking 6 or 7 classes per term.

Classes either meet for 1:05 on MWF or for 1:50 with a break (so really 1:40) T&Th. Teachers also have one "X-hour" available each week, when they are allowed to call an extra session. Some teachers use every X-hour, some use none. Labs are beyond that. They meet once a week, timing depending on the class (I've taken a class where labs were usually over within an hour and a half, but I also know orgo uses about 6 hours).

I agree...isn't it great? :D
