Advantages of JD/MBA dual degree

I am a sophomore in college. I am a dual major in Poli Sci/Philosophy and law school is my goal. My question is this: is it possible to go to get the jd/mba dual degree straight out of undergrad? What are the advantages/disadvantages of this degree. Is it better or worse than getting the degrees separately? All answers are appreciated. War Eagle!

What do you want to do with a JD/MBA degree? You need to answer this question before any good evaluation can be given about advantages/disadvantages of a JD/MBA degree.

I’m looking at investment banking, but I really like law too. University of Alabama has an MBA/JD program that you can finish in 3 years just like regular law school. Would having that law degree put me ahead of the other applicants with only an mba?

From a top t14 school it would, if you want to go into business. A dual MBA/JD is a powerful weapon in corporate America. But the dual degree really doesn’t help you much in law unfortunately. At most, it may raise your credibility among business clients. And there’s always the chance that a law firm might fear hiring you out of fear that you will quit and go into the business world.

If you want to make big bucks quickly, you need to get the dual degree from a t14 school.

So it does help in the business world but not in the law world?

…I wouldn’t agree with that as a blanket statement as it really depends on what you want to do.

If you specifically want to do something in business that directly involves the law and legal work then yes I can see it being an advantage, but in general within business it’s not going to help too much over someone else who has expertise and/or experience in some other area.

I do not believe a JD/MBA degree will help you much in Investment Banking. The best route for IB is to attend a target school and obtain a high GPA with a degree in Finance.
