Advertising major at UofI and Greek Life?

Hey guys!

I recently accepted my offer to the UofI and although I chose to pursue a major in Advertising (yes, i looked into it and I was pretty convinced when i applied) but I think i might switch to marketing or economics later and minor in Ad instead. My first question is: What's the general perception of an Ad major? I'm an international student (south asian) and I get the odd look when I tell someone I'm going to the UofI for Advertising, I think they expect me to be an engineering major? anyways, let me know if you have any insider stories of this major and if you think I'd be better off switching!

Second question: Is the greek life as stereotypical as it sounds? I'm very social, up for partying and organizing events and what not, but I'd still like have my academics of track. Initially, I considered rushing for a sorority but right now, I'm more intimidated by the process than excited. Do internationals even get bids at UofI? Also, is a large percentage of the Advertising/Business student population (the non-engineers) involved in greek life?

Any information on rushing for international students and this major is greatly appreciated! :)

Study what makes you happy. I’m in engineering but apparently Business is really hard to transfer into. One of my friends is an advertising major and in a sorority she has a lot of free time on her hands and goes out 3-4 times a week. And yea the sororities are exactly as stereotypical as they seem, I’m pretty sure everyone gets a bid to at least one sorority.

This kid is completely off. I’m in the business school and greek life here. A large majority of Ad majors are in sorority (I think for business around 50% are in greek life). Honestly, I think transferring into the business school is a little bit over hyped, around 60% of the kids that apply for an intercollegiate transfer are accepted. You need a 3.5+ which is fairly easy to get as a non-engineer. With that being said, Ad majors are artsy, creative people and if you truly have a passion for advertising then I would tell you to continue in your current track. UIUC is one of the top Ad schools.

Yankeesfan unfairly represents greek life. Some of the most brilliant girls I’ve met on campus are in sororities (3.5+ in CS or ENG, involved in all sorts of prestigious organizations).Houses do bid internationals. However, all girls do not receive a bid, don’t let this intimidate you its a very small percentage. I would highly advise you to rush, its made a profound impact on my life and the friendships and networks you develop through greek life are incredible. No house is filled with all blonde bombshells; each house has very different types of people in it. Each house has its own unique feel. I encourage you and all others to rush because regardless of the outcome, you will have discovered something about yourself. Best of luck and hopefully I’ll see you on campus next fall!
