Advice about a bad grade, please?

Hello, I am a first-year attending a UC right now, hoping to transfer to either UCLA, Cal, USC, Cornell.

I have one major problem. I am an Econ major and recently got a poor grade for Math. This is my first non-A of my college career. I got a C+.

Should I retake the class? I'm really distraught right now. With that grade, my GPA drops down to a 3.71. =(

ah..the first C (I doubt that you can retake a class in which you have gotten a C in, although it might be different for your school)..anyway...try not to think about it too much. I got a C in Physics my first semester, and I was devastated. I never expected to start out college with a bad grade, but in a way that motivated me to do even better. Just don't think about it too much. It's only a C, not a big deal.

Bad finals week huh? Sorry to hear that.

Can you contact the professor to inquire about the grade? I changed my only C to a B that way. I stayed and argued for a good hour and a half (to a guy with who spoke philippino spanish, I know spanish but his accent was very heavy) until he gave in.

Anyway 3.71 is solid for UCLA as a UC to UC transfer. Plus you still have tons of time in future courses. Just keep a high GPA and get involved at the campus, you should be fine when November comes around.

my first semester, i had a poor grade, not a C, but it killed my gpa, from a 3.8 to a 3.6

ok guys im in a similar situation...i have the choice of either making a c in the class, or getting an F and then retaking it for an A. what do i do? yo help me out. hela importnat.

Even if u make up a F for A, certain schools (Penn comes to mind) require that students transcripts be free of all "Failures." Even if you get the gpa back up through Academic Renewal or Retake it for an A, a F looks really bad.

Why not just take a "W" ?

cuz i cant. drop date's already passed. but even a C? i dont know. at this point, im really confused. the major schools im looking at will consider next quarter calc which i can get an a in, and then POSSIBLY explain it on my transcript, but itll just SLAUGHTER my gpa. i dont know what to do.

ok, well if an F looks relaly bad, why not take a D, you can then retake it for an A and not have the F?

Take the C and move on. It's just one grade out of many, and you won't want to deal with the class again (and possibly overload in terms of credits). Also, you might not even do better the second time.

zemookmook, please post your own thread. Thank you.

although that was extraordinarily rude and you need to get over yourself because re-taking c's wont re-allocate gpa distribution because you passed the course and therefore retaking the course has no impact whatsoever and (nobody really cares whether or not it's the first non-a of your anything career) our posts are almost absolutely and directly related (and i feel bad for you that you're distraught over a grade you now have now control over)

but you're right-i'm sorry for hijacking your thread.

"although that was extraordinarily rude"

How was it rude?

I nicely addressed you by your full username, said "please" and "Thank you."

"ok guys im in a similar situation...i have the choice of either making a c in the class, or getting an F and then retaking it for an A. what do i do? yo help me out. hela importnat."

I like the "yo help me out. hela impornat." Again, at least I used "please" in my thread title.

First off, it woulda been cool if you would've said, "Hey, if you don't mind me joining in on your thread..." But you didn't, you just came in. THAT is rude. Then I come back and nicely ask you to make your own thread, you say that "that's extraordinarily rude."

Second, if no one cared, why would they respond? Why are they on this board? Everyone's here to help each other out. Calm down.

I wish you luck and success in your future endeavors. Have a nice day.

With that said, thank you, Citan, Matt30, and dukeclassof09 for your responses.

Matt, I'm going to make an appointment to speak with my prof about the grade. Hopefully I can convince him to at least bump it up from a C+ to a B-.

Look trekkie. I dont care where it was you got your forum roots-but the nature of this board is a shared collection of ideas and advice and suggestions put forward by people who have already gone through this process. This is not a formal soiree where you waltz in and demand attention solely to your own topic. If you want further assistance in your question, post another reply to your own post asking for elaboration-if you want to belay other people in very similar situations from getting the answers they need irrespective of the importance on thier behalf, here's a thought: "Beam somewhere out of here".

Here's another hint: in specific terms, i said that nobody cared whether or not it was the first or second or third A of your career. All that's doing is bordering on "I'm not a bad student, I just messed up a class." That's ASSUMED; we dont need your self-justification, because we understand. Get out of your emo corner and do what you can in your situation, which i'm glad you figured out thanks to the help of the rest of the people here.

one more thing, if you noticed, the advice that the people posted on this board could be interchangeable between your question and mine...how does that make our questions irrelevant? how does that detract from the purpose of this thread?

get some hasish or something and go get laid thanks.

If it stays at a C+, I just might retake it since its math and I am majoring in economics like you. You probably worked very hard for all those A's and to have one C+ bring all down sucks, and to graduate thinking "if only I didn't get that C..." would also suck (not that 1 C will kill you since in the end, its not gonna affect your overall gpa that much). You have the option of taking it over again, and the schools you are applying to are very competitive, so if I were you, I'd take it again.

And if you dont mind me butting in....

zemookmook: Whats your problem? You need to chill. Perhaps you should take your own advice...Theres no reason to be so condescending.

It seems as though both of you are arguing for nothing. You both got a C/C+ and want to know if CC thinks you should take the current grade, or get an F so you can retake it for a better grade next semester, right? While asking another question and directing others attention is technically hijacking a thread, its the same question so stop arguing.

And if your going to continue, try to watch your language and dont be so harsh. Startraksfinest didn't do say any thing rude or offensive whereas it seems zemookmook is just trying to stir stuff up. Just chill

i suppose you're right. i was having a bad day because im taking that math final next week and i've been really confused as to what to do. so i've kind of been on edge. i apologize startraksfinest.

zemookmook, apology accepted. We're in the exact same boat, so don't worry. I feel your pain about Math. ERRRR!!! Zemook, I'm at a UC, so I don't exactly know how the whole retaking a class if you fail works. I'm going to ask the peer advisors when I get back from spring break.

I thought about intentionally failing too AKA asking the teacher to give me a NP, so that I can retake the class. I just don't know if that NP shows up on the transcript. "If we were to intentionally not pass, retake it and get an A, would the NP show on the transcript?" That's the true question here. Because if in fact, I can just get the NP, retake the class, and then no one would ever seen the NP, I'd gladly take that route.

I'll post the info that I get from the peer advisors.

BTW: My user name is Star TRAK, not Trek. Star Trak is a record label. No biggie, just don't want everyone to think I'm some raging William Shatner fan.

Well, for anyone interested in an update, here's one.

I talked to the peer advisor here and he informed me that you CANNOT take a class that you already passed.

I got my first C too... I'm kinda bummed since I can't change it to P.

I'm thankful that it won't factor in to admissions for fall 06 :) and it's good enough to not get rescinded. Just move on to next quarter and do better.

BTW Which UC do you go to? I'm at sd.

Dude,

Don't be dissin' the Shatman!!! He may not be your cup-o-tea, but the man can rock!

That said, 3.71 is a very good GPA. Now, for the real question, what math course did you get the C+? The way I see it, a better strategy would be to take a harder math next semester and do better.

Show that you've learned from your mistakes and there will be no explaining.

Good luck!
