Advice about the waitlist

Hi!

Any advice about being placed on the waitlist?? Is this becoming a fairly common phemonenon?? I must say we are surprised since we thought an acceptance (or two) was likely. Now we have 2 waitlists and are not optimistic about the upcomong Ivys.

Thanks!!

“Is this becoming a fairly common phenomenon?”

Yes. With the onset of the Common App and the ability to easily apply to over a dozen schools, colleges find their old algorithms for projecting initial accepts to their offers to be very shaky. Therefore, they need to rely on a deeper WL in order to ensure they fill enough beds come Sept.

If your stats are significantly higher than average, you may be overqualified which can be a reason to get waitlisted (because the schools assume they are a safety school and you won’t actually matriculate).

Also with the crazy number of applicants at schools this year, there will probably be a lot more people getting in off waitlists.

Since (based on having only two waitlist results and Ivy League schools pending) you did not have a true safety in your application list, make plans to attend a community college and then transfer as a junior to a university if you do not get into any of the Ivy League schools that you are waiting on.

To ucbalumnus:

DD did have safety schools, and she has been accepted to them (with money, to boot!). It is not a matter of community college. Just a matter of having at least one of the top choices as opposed to the second tier. We just want to get a handle on what to expect.

My opinion is that due to the many waitlisted students from a whole slew of colleges, there will be waves of WL action in the weeks to come. For instance, let’s say Columbia underestimates its yield and decides to go for 70 more students off their waitlist to fill 50 slots. Of these 70, 40 decide to accept Columbia’s offer. Columbia needs to still fill the remaining 10 and dips into the WL a 2nd time. Meanwhile, the 40 new Columbia acceptees decline their previous schools, opening up slots from which the schools may need to dip into their wait lists. And on and on… It’s not unheard of for WL actions to happen into August, believe it or not.

Good luck to you.
