I'm a rising high school freshman, and am deciding whether to take English 10 (Pre-AP) Honors or AP Language and Composition. Since I was accelerated early, I'm on track to do the former. However, I took the SAT and ACT earlier this year and got (forgive me if I seem to brag) extremely high scores for my age.

Here's my question- should I go ahead and take Eng. 10 or apply to AP Lang? English is my best subject and I would like a challenge, but I don't want to have too much on my plate.

Take English 9 Honors if possible, most colleges require 4 years of English in high school and you are going to run out of classes.

nooooooo don’t take ap lang you’ll be that annoying freshman don’t do it please

also idk about your school but in our school most kids who are “above average” get low b’s or c’s in ap lang.

I’ve already taken English 9, so I wouldn’t be able to retake it even if I wanted to.
Also, @awesome I’m not sure what you mean- most freshmen who are considered above average, or most students in the class?

I would like to point out that the SAT verbal and writing section is very easy, and I wouldn’t put much stock in it. Just take the next English class. There’s no particular reason to be two years ahead in English. You’ll become a better writer with time and practice, not by rushing through English courses.

Take English 10 Honors, AP Lang sophomore year, AP Lit junior year and do a DE class for senior year. Don’t take AP English Lang because you’re going to run out of classes too early

If you can get 33+ in the English ACT section, along with 10 writing or 750+ SAT writing, you might be in shape. I know it doesn’t directly correlate to AP Lang, but you have to be naturally strong for the MC section of the exam, which is similar to the SAT/ACT. Then you have to be a strong essay writer period. You’ll be competing with Juniors/Seniors.

Teachers said AP Lang would be so hard, I learned nothing in the class, got a 5, it’s natural writing skills, if you have it, then enjoy!

My ACT scores were 36 on both the English and Reading sections. For the SAT, it was 770 for CR and 760 for W. Is that good enough?

I say go for it. Your SAT and ACT are great. I know many people that are 3 years accelerated in math. If your strength is English I see no reason not to continue to accelerate.

Based on your test scores, definitely just start with AP lang now.

Thanks guys. Now all that remains to be seen is whether my counselor feels the same way.
