@moonpie Congratulations on that score!

I just wanted to share that my DD applied to CalArts this past year for character animation and submitted her sketchbook to them with a self addressed stamped envelope for them to send it back. They mailed it back to her in May if I recall, so you won’t be able to use the same sketchbook for any other submissions. FWIW, CalArts was the only school that she applied to that required a physical sketchbook as part of the portfolio. Hope this helps!

Yes!! She has a sketch book she is working on for CalArts! I did a spreadsheet for her a week ago with the schools she’s applying to, due dates, requirements etc. about a week ago. It was a little daunting!

I know its late but two other schools to consider are VCUARTS just ranked #2 fine arts grad behind Yale and tied with UCLA and for animation I would also take a look at Ringling. Cal arts is also very very good. best of luck

So here’s the plan for the fall… RISD/Brown visit in October, followed by train ride to New York. Will do Pratt, Parsons, and SVA while there. Skipping NYU because they really don’t have an animation program that seems to be what my daughter would like (and aid/scholarships are probably nil). She’s working on her submissions for Young Arts and Scholastic competitions, and her college apps. Am I forgetting anywhere in NYC? Then we will do ohio state, ETSU (our only option for state school), and wait for west coast schools until she has an acceptance (CalArts, UCLA, USC, Laguna College of Art and Design… I think that’s it?) We are in high stress time… ACT (second sitting today, All-state try-outs (vocal) and finishing out strong.

Sounds like a great plan. And good luck to you too @moonpie ! Senior year was one big roller coaster of stress at our house too. It’s a lot of work for the art student AND the parents!

29 ACT, 4.3 GPA… should she retake to go for higher (has a 30 superscore) but has a free re-take in October in our state.

If re-taking doesn’t cause a lot of anxiety it’s worth it to try and up the score a bit for super-scoring. I forget if finances are an issue in your decision, but all of the schools D1 applied to offered some kind of merit aid based on her academics and every little bit helps! Mine took both SATs (the old version) and ACTs and then re-took the one she did better on (in her case ACTs) to try and up the score.

She does NOT want to re-take it, but I think she should!! It comes at the end of her fall break, and she has a whole week off to study

To be honest when D1 re-took ACTs she went up in some and then down in others…so superscore was exactly the same as first time. Good luck with decision - it’s never easy to know when to nudge vs to back off (especially with artistic temperaments!!!

Update: she retook the ACT and got the same score, but had a highest reading and English, so her superscore is now a 31. She’s furiously working on all her applications and is a bit stressed. I just want all this to be over so she can enjoy her senior year! I had no idea how much work this was going to be! In other news, she did make the State’s All State Choir and is super excited about that!

So… 2 early Action acceptances, SVA (one of her top 3!) with a $50,000 merit scholarship, and SAIC with a $71,400 merit! SCAD called yesterday to officially offer acceptance and said a packet will be following. Pretty happy that there are merit offers so early!!!

@moonpie congrats to your daughter! Excellent news! Has the SCAD package arrived yet? Please continue to post results as they come in!

Yep!!! It came. Just a generic packet… she’s being completely open until all scholarships are in!

@JBStillFlying SCAD FA came today, $10,000 in academic scholarships but only $1000 Merit (for 2017/18)… not enough, but it’s a start!

So SCAD called and asked when my daughters portfolio would be there so her file could be completed. She sent it through their slide room on Dec. 4! Anyway, its been found, and she’s hopefully being considered for merit awards now (the scholarships so far are academic). They asked for copies of her Scholastic and Governors school awards as well

SCAD increased her honors scholarship by $2000 this week. Just got a phone call from LCAD offering admission and scholarship last night. Really cool to hear the other end of the phone call : ) Now… the wait for all the big schools/long shots begins!

Congratulations to your daughter for all her acceptances and scholarships so far! Seems like yesterday we were going through the same process. Good luck as you wait on the last few.

Our son is in his second semester at LCAD as a freshman. He is a graphic design + digital media major. Two of his dorm mates are in the animation program. Son chose LCAD over several other schools he was accepted to last year. He can’t imagine himself at any other college and now neither can we. His studio classes are 18/1 student to teacher ratio. His general ed classes are 30/1. GE taught by adjunct teachers who teach at UCI, UCSD, and other neighboring colleges & universities. He had an amazing English teacher last semester.

Last years’ Graphic Design student graduates were 100% employed at graduation and I believe animation students to be at about 85% employment. The intern programs are abundant and most students are working at paid internships by their junior year.

I wanted to share this info because we had never heard of the college before he applied. If anyone has any other questions about the application, school, campus, or surrounding area just ask here or PM me. Because we don’t live too far away, we see him about twice a month. Laguna Beach is a beautiful place to visit!
