I loved the school and i know i will receive a quality education but i just dont know how my experience will be there, being a black city kid around in a small town surround by a majority of white kids. I have no problem with race and no problem with having white friends but how will i fit in and with such a small population i am most likely gonna be be surrounded by similar individuals. Anyone with kenyon experience please help out!

Hey :)

I’m black as well. I grew up in suburbia, in a majority white population. I’ve been to Kenyon before, for summer programs, and I was also accepted there. I’m considering going.

Let me tell you now, that you will have NO problems. Everyone at Kenyon is so open. I love it there. Once again, let me state, that you will have NO problems. Take my word for it.

thanx seebo…im just worried that i will be in such a confined place for four years and its such a big transition from city life…i don’t know if i can handle it…i just wish i could know more about the social scene…what schools are you considering?

I’m black too, and had the same concerns as you when I was choosing. I went to visit during their minority weekend, and it really made me want to pick Kenyon more. I’ve heard that the Black Student Union is a pretty strong group, and that they’re like an extended family. A lot of the black people, and students of other races, I talked to said that it ended up not being as bad as they expected. I remember reading something about a Puerto Rican guy saying he became more into his culture and embraced it more when he got to Kenyon.

And of course, Kenyon will never become more diverse unless more diverse people come. ;)

very true…yeah i went tot he diversity week also but i failed to really get to see or talk with the student body

hmm…okay well im asian, but I really had my heart set on going to a school in the city. I am happy about getting accepted to Kenyon, but still…Ohio…

i really understand the feeling…its such a huge commitment

I’m considering Kenyon, and then some schools in the Boston area.

But seriously, Kenyon is great. To be honest, when I was there, I forgot that I was Black. You can take that how you want, but I thought that was a great feeling, considering many times where I live (in a majority white suburbs), you will hear little comments, snide remarks, etc. I experienced none of that at Kenyon.

The reason Kenyon is probably lacking in diversity is simply due to its location. It’s in the middle of Ohio, lol, and minorities simply might know about it.

I’ve been to schools where they don’t have diversity, because honestly, they don’t want it. But Kenyon is not one of those schools.

You wont have any problems at Kenyon. The school lacks diversity because it is in the middle of Ohio, has a small endowment and therefore can’t spend tons of money attracting minority students, and hasn’t been willing to completely sacrifice its academic standards to attract such students. The result is that Kenyon has a relatively small number of minority students that blends in well with the majority white students. I think the above posts are correct, you would probably consider skin color to be a less important factor socially at Kenyon than at a school where there is a higher percentage of black students.

ive decided that kenyon is the school for me

haha actually me too

yeah iamthinking!! see ya in august!
