Basically UCSB is my target school, and if i don't get in i'm planning on city college then transferring (for both practical and financial reasons).

What can I do this year to better my chances of getting in? (excluding getting good grades to raise my gpa, of course)

UCSB is a reach for you - my D had a 3.8 and 27 ACT and outstanding ECs and didn’t get in 2008 - SBCC then transferring is your safest bet. But apply anyway - you never know :)

UCs are very numbers-driven, and it all depends on what major in the school you are applying for. Assuming you are a senior, you really can’t do much for your GPA at this point (other than, as you say, getting great grades this year), but raising those SATS and getting high SAT IIs will help. My son got in in 2008 with a UC GPA of 3.8 and 1920 SATs, so you’re not totally out of the ballpark. As poster above stated, SBCC and then transferring is a great alternative if you don’t get in as a freshman.

Many kids from my children’s school got into UCSB with marks much lower than those listed. I’m not sure if because of budget cuts it is harder to get in, not sure.
