Incoming freshman here. I have a few questions that I hope current or past students might help answer…
- Even after all the research I've done, NYU's size and NYC's pace still intimidates me. I come from a small, tight-knit high school, and so interaction between peers has been somewhat unavoidable and it was easier to make friends. I hear a lot about how "lonely" it can be at NYU, especially as a freshman (the notorious adjustment period), and I hear a lot about "putting yourself out there." I'm what you might call an introvert by nature, so was wondering how exactly do you go about "putting yourself out there" at such a large and busy place. Would meeting someone random/striking up a conversation/asking for their phone number (might get the wrong idea?) be weird? Any concrete tips or examples?
- I'm also somewhat concerned that social life seems to revolve largely around partying and clubbing, which isn't really my scene. I prefer having a small and close group of friends, as well as more cultural events in the city. How big is the clubbing scene, really? Will I be able to find my niche?
- In terms of picking classes, I'm open to exploring various subjects and courses. So, are there any courses (of any subject) that you think are Must-take? Are there any life-changing professors that I should definitely sign up for?
- And just in general, any advice for freshman year? Things to do, things to avoid doing, safety issues etc...
