Anyone have any tips for asking for more merit? We need 3-5K more for my D to go to her top choice. This was her 1st acceptance
Success will depend on the school, but we asked and received more for my son. Even though he only received merit aid, we called and asked for a financial aid review. They were very helpful and went through our finances carefully, told us we weren’t eligible for any FA and advised us to request a merit review. We then did that, sending his first semester grades, a bigger merit offer from another college, and an additional recommendation from one of his EC leaders. S received an additional $8k in merit. You’ve got nothing to lose to ask. Good luck!
Thank you
I’m going to try my hardest
If they can’t give you more in financial aid or merit then ask for a housing credit. This is could equal your amount. It worked for us. But with covid and such a small amount they might just give it to you. Also there’s work study or getting a school job to make up the difference.
Goes without saying- but a lot of people don’t do this, so it bears repeating-
1- Figure out what the number is. 3? 4? 5? Be specific- don’t ask for “more”, ask for what the number is.
2- Tell the Adcom, “Your college is my top choice, and if you can increase the aid by 3K per year I am ready to commit”.
3- Then do it- don’t stall, play one school off the other, try to increase the offer yet again.
This is what we for for my daughter at a small Lac. Big Universities are hard to come by but worth a try
I called the school & my D has to write a reconsideration request & give supporting reasons etc
We will try after we get some other acceptances w/ offers
She had a great 1st MP so they said include that too & amount looking for
Good luck!
