Hi. I transferred to Berkeley during the fall of 2006. I was a big-time lurker on CC and posted my two cents once in a blue moon. I am currently doubling in Social Welfare and Poli Sci.

Anyway, if you transfers have any advice on things like housing, like on vs off, northside vs southside, how to find housing, commuting, ECs, the Cal environment, professors, advice for L&S majors, bars, hangouts, good restaurants, good places to stay while you visit for CalSO -- go ahead and send me a message.

Best,
cj

p.s. - one thing i regretted was that my mom was holding my mail hostage. i missed out on a lot of cool stuff because i didnt get the info that came as postcards to my house. and i hadnt even transferred yet! anyway keep your eye out on information on how to get free season tickets. apparently freshmen and transfers get them while everyone else has to pay for them. i believe they exclude the Big Game (vs Stanford) but i'm not sure. from my understanding the earlier you get them, the better. i was told if you get them early enough, they'll include the UCLA game for free, or some good games like that. anyway, not positively sure about that extra info, but sign up for them, ASAP. again it's free!

I applied as a political science major going in. My GPA was about 3.5, I think. After I transferred, it went up to maybe 3.63 or something like that. I declared social welfare when I was here because I had taken the prereqs already at CC. It's not a difficult major to complete. But it is really impacted over here. There are waitlists to take the gateway course titled SW 110. Without that, you are not able to take any of the other core SW courses and must take the electives first.

the 'asian ghetto' supposedly has good italian restaurants. among other things i recommend Top Dog (hot dogs) and Zachary's (deep dish pizzas!).

is CalSO absolutely necessary? Cause the dates are really bad for me, and I was wondering if I miss out on it would it put me at a big disadvantage.

how is it like making friends? I don't know anyone who goes there, and it seems like all my friends are going to UCLA? whats a good way to make friends? Dorming? Living on campus? Clubs? I really want my college experience to be enjoyable and I dont want to end up staying in my room on friday nights while everyone else is having a good time.

ditto on the CalSO thing. i'm really scared i won't get into some popular classes that i want because i won't be able to sign up until july if i don't go to calSO.

cja1130, i am also going to be a poli sci major. how would you say the classes were in relation to community college classes (in terms of difficulty)?

CalSO is not necessary at all. You can find all the information they give you online. However, the only advantage you get of paying that $95 dollars is registering classes before everyone else, even seniors. =O

I am doing really well in my CC, and I just got accepted to Cal. However, I always think the reason why I am having a high GPA is because classes at my CC are really easy.
What do you think? Do you thinking I will have a hard time at Cal?

I have the same concerns... I was thinking of starting out easy, like starting out with five classes, and taking a few courses for the sake of interest.

i was actually really surprised that i got into Cal with only a 3.5 gpa and am very worried about how hard classes are going to be. is cal one of those schools that weans out the weaklings with competitive classes? is it common for transfers to drop out?

Taking five classes at cal is a lot! Just start out with 12 units until you get the hang of things.

But I also worried about how my CC was really easy. But based upon other people who transferred to Cal from my CC, he said he was handling it well.
