Advice for far schools?

Hey, I live the in the Bay Area, and I recently got into UCSD, which is my top school. However, it is a 7 hour drive. Does anyone have advice on transportation? I know it's very hard on my parents, so I'm looking for alternatives to travel there. Thanks for any help!

Bus? ten char

AT LEAST a 7 hour drive. You can hit some brutal traffic from LA to San Diego. You might find fellow UCSD students who want to carpool down, help pay for their gas, etc. It might be that it is much cheaper to fly from LAX or Burbank or wherever, there might be some bus option from San Diego to whatever airport and then fly to the bay area.

Sorry if I sound like I'm stating the obvious, but...why don't you just fly? I don't know the Bay Area at all, but I'm sure there's at least one major airport there.

You could take a train? Might be faster than driving because you wouldn't have to deal with the horrible traffic down here in southern California.

how much is it for a ticket for a flight that will take 1.5 hours tops?

it might be cheaper than paying for gas for a round trip.

one major airport? try about three.

whenever I've made the trip down to San Diego by car, from the Bay Area (which is relatively frequently, at least once or twice a year), it's taken nearly closer to a full 10-12 hours. Now, I don't take I-5, because it's awful to drive through the valley, but even if you did, it would still take longer than 7 hours.

Just fly. it's cheap (under a $100 on Southwest). besides, how often do you want to be able to come home, anyway? oh, and in regards to the train option, I don't think that would be feasible until we get the baby bullet trains built; that is, never.

Same dilemma. Sort of. I got into UCSD and I live in the bay area. My parents don't want me living far away. They want me to go to UCD, which is like a 15 min drive from my house. I think not. Berkeley is an hour, but if i got in, I wouldn't mind being close to home.

I agree with way12.

Take a flight to San Diego. You would avoid all the trafiic. I know LA has a lot of traffic.

Also, considering the price of gas these days, taking a plane would not be that expensive compared to the amount of gas you need to drive from NorCal to SoCal.
