Advice for Finding GT Roommate.

Hello.

I am a female incoming GT freshman from out of state, and I do not know who to room with. Since the housing application doesn’t ask many questions on their survey, I am worried about letting myself be randomly assigned. I have looked at my “matches” on the StarRez portal, but I can only see what their preferences on the survey are and if they provide any social media links (which about half do). Granted, I don’t have any links to post either (my parents don’t want me getting involved with social networking sites). I also know that a friend of a friend from a city 2 hours away from me is going to GT too, but I have not met her.

I’m a bit shy about reaching out to people, especially since this is a new experience, but I’m even more uncomfortable about being randomly assigned. So, my questions are:
-What are people’s experiences with being randomly assigned or requesting a roommate?
-Is there any benefit of choosing someone who is from GA versus someone out-of-state like me?
-Do you have any other advice or questions for me?

Thank you.

I think you should go random. I have heard horror stories about people who thought they would be compatible online, but ended up hating each other in person. I think everyone at Georgia Tech will be pretty intelligent, and I’m sure your roommate will try and become friends with you. I have had plenty of friends who have gone random and really get along with their roommate.

But ultimately, it’s not about becoming best friends. You could have a roommate that you just coexist with. You will probably make friends no matter who you room with, so I wouldn’t be too concerned. However, if you get matched with someone REALLY crazy, I would imagine that you could take that up with the Housing Staff at your GT and they could fix it.

Good luck!

@IvyGirl27 Thank you for the advice. It’s just a little intimidating going into it, but then again so is the rest of the beginning of college.

“What are people’s experiences with being randomly assigned or requesting a roommate?”

My son went random freshman year. They did not become friends but were able to co-exist for the 9 months. He went random again for the summer the guy was nice but my son already had roommates for the fall/spring. Fall/spring sophomore year he roomed with a friend from high school and his friends random roommate from freshmen year plus a random guy. Then son went random last summer. Junior year fall/spring he roomed with the other 2 guys from sophomore year(friend from high school & friends roommate from freshmen year) plus another guy they met. They will all room again together this next fall/spring too.

My point is you can go random and not become friends and it will still be fine. Also sometimes the random roommate will become your friend and you will room with them in future years.

Also DS’s girlfriend has lots of friends but has preferred to have random roommates each year.

@Mysterytwin12 I agree with @MichiganGeorgia. Random selection for college roommates is about as good as trying hard to match . Getting along with others is a great life skill so don’t sweat it, just don’t even worry about roommates. My son had a similar experience as @MichiganGeorgia’s son, although at a different university.

. His freshman year he got a roommate who he did not talk to much but it was not a problem to share the room. They just were polite to each other and found other friends. Sophomore and junior year he got suites with friends. One of those friends shared an off campus apartment with my son one summer. It all works out, and if you learn to get along with a person different from yourself for nine months, then part ways, you gain job skills and maybe a new friend.

About 90% of workplace problems are getting along with others who are not the same as us.

Spent time thinking about your academic strengths, what clubs you may want to join, what classes you should take, if you want to pledge a sorority and leave the roommate to random chance.

Looking for a female roommate living out of campus. The apartment we are looking at is in a safe area. Modern apartment built between 2006 to 2015. Secure building with controlled access and 24-hour security. Rate is $1680 to $1866 per month for a two bedrooms. Each person pays about $840 to $933 per month. That is $4200 to $4665 per semester. Each person will has her own private bedroom. The rate is cheaper than Georgia Tech’s private room rate. My daughter did not sign on on campus housing because of a wait-list situation. Please message me if you are interested. Thanks!

^ I would post this on the GT reddit page.

Thanks for the tip.

Thank you @MichiganGeorgia and @Coloradomama for your advice. I’m not as worried about going random now.
