Advice for future transfer applicant? I need to transfer sophomore year...help?

I'm really curious as to what it takes to be accepted to UNC as a transfer student? This would be to get in for my sophomore year. I'm attending American University in D.C. Other than good grades, what should I do to ensure my chances? Is UNC still extremely tough to get into, even as a transfer? I'm in state. Does anyone have any experience with the process?

p.s: I applied for freshman admissions, but got denied. (I had a peculiar high school situation though, grade wise, so I'm hoping if I have a really good GPA my freshman year in college, I'd have a shot)

The general criteria used by admissions (as I interpret them) are this: College-level grades and performance are weighed more heavily than high school grades. The longer you are out of high school, the less weight is applied to your secondary school performance. Explaining unique extenuating circumstances helps assuage fears that you will slip with more rigorous study.

You did not mention your HS GPA, so I’m going to assume it’s around 3.0 for the sake of argument. Your chances of being accepted as a Sophomore with a Freshman college GPA of 3.8+ are a bit better. But your chances of being accepted as a Junior with two solid years of a 3.75+ GPA are much, much better. You have to show them that you can sustain excellence in your academic work, not just pull it off for a year. This doesn’t mean 100-level courses in easy subjects, of course.

I got in with a 3.6 with 60 or so credits and really lame sat(which i reported by mistake) .If you are a first generation student make sure to mention it as it helps quite a bit. My classes to be honest were just all over the place (math ,humanities ,music? and even pe classes).
