In addition to the more obvious things you can find elsewhere, here’s one person’s advice FWIW:

Make sure you really want to do it. If unsure, it’s probably best not to bother - it is an arduous application/nomination process.

Complete all parts of your application early - make your application due date the date they start accepting applications, not the deadline. Remember, “early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable”.

Show a pattern of ongoing interest - Maintain contact with your ALO every two weeks by email or a call; if nothing else just to check in. Call your admissions contact monthly.

Indicate a technical major - this may change in future years, but in 2012, a non-technical major was a BIG disadvantage for USAFA and ROTC scholarships.

Apply to more than one SA to improve your chances of getting an acceptance somewhere. Any one of the SA’s may pass over a highly qualified candidate in a given year, but it’s much less likely all of the SA’s will.

Apply for an ROTC scholarship in addition to USAFA.

Don’t apply to any academy you aren’t seriously considering attending. This can actually backfire on you due to how some NOM’s are awarded. You SHOULD apply to all available NOM sources your are eligible for.

It is better to have a complete and thorough application then just trying to get it in early. All NOM’s are issued at the same time, so NO ONE can get an appointment before completing that part of the process.

ALO’s have other jobs, so continually calling/emialing them for no specific reason will certainly get you noticed, but for the WRONG reason. Same goes for the admissions office or your MOC.

Raimius is correct, Random. While AFROTC may actually require its scholarship awardees to have a technical major, I don’t think that’s even considered with USAFA. In fact, it would be silly to think that, considering they have majors in English, Foreign Area Studies, Behavioral Science, Management…

Of course, EVERYONE at USAFA is awarded the Bachelor of SCIENCE degree, even if majoring in English. And each cadet takes lots of math, engineering, chemistry (the bane of many cadets), Physics (even worse!), etc.

Is there even a section on the USAFA application for “intended major?” I don’t remember. Cadets are not required to choose a major until the end of 3rd degree year.
