advice for junior college visits?

Hello, we're new to the forum, but everyone's advice seems so helpful.

My junior daughter and I are going to visit 3 colleges over spring break. We have appts. set up with admissions people, and classes set up for her to observe. We are going to UofMichigan, Cincinnati, Carnegie Mellon.

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice based on your visits to campuses? Anything we should make sure we try to see, or ask about? We have friends who are students on 2 of the campuses who can show us around a little.

The only other thing I would add is that, if possible, try to time your visits so you can see a production while you are there.

make SURE that as much as possible you are dealing directly with the dept. Our experience was that general admissions doesn't necessarily have all the info you would want/need for MT. While MT is of critical interest to you/us, at most schools it is just another program and usually not even the biggest/most significant

See if it would be possible for your daughter to take a lesson with a voice lesson or dance class (whichever is more important to your D) while she is there. Also, ask whether the majority of undegrad's voice lessons (for instance) are taught by Graduate students or by faculty. At least one of the schools on your list has an excellent reputation and sterling faculty, but those faculty members are also active performers and leave their lessons to be handled by TAs and Grad Students. For some, that might not be a problem (although, with the costs there being astronomical, it bothers me on THAT basis alone!) but if a student has a "delicate throat" or is prone to polyps, a less experienced teacher might not catch it in time. Just something to consider....
