If I get a 5 on the BC exam, should I take Math 53/54 or start from Math 1A/1B? I've heard things both ways -- since I'm already acquainted with some of the math material it's more probable that I'll do better in those classes and earn somewhat "easier" grades. Going directly to 53/54 is tough. However, I also read in another topic that Math 53/54 is easier than the Math 1 series.

Same for chem. Let's say I get a 4 or 5 on the AP. Should I begin with 1A, 1B, or something else?

If you get a 5 on the BC exam, you should skip math 1ab.
Out of all the AP courses, calculus is the one that is the MOST like the actual college classes... so you should feel quite confident in skipping math 1ab.
Math 53/54 (which can be taken in either order because they are independent classes) are not that difficult...

Chemistry is a different story... if you major in chemistry or chemical engineering, I don't believe they give credit for the AP exam.
There are two intro tracks in Chemistry: the 3a,3b,5 sequence, or the more advanced 4ab sequence which covers the same material as 3ab and 5, but at a faster more advanced pace... if you do well on the AP exam, then you should take the 4ab sequence instead of the 3ab/5 sequence.

But of course, you should check specifically with the departments that interest you... check out the department websites for more specific advice.

if u go into chem eng or chemistry u have to take 4a, they give us no choice, my 5 on the chem is worthless. if ur not in the college of chemistry u might be able to skip a class. i am planning to go into 53/54, y go into 1A/1B? it will be easy, but since u already know it all it will be a waste of time and money (assuming u get a 5 :) good luck!, how was it btw?)

darkhelmet, the calc AP was pretty easy. I had 3 MC omits (out of 45 questions) and was stumped by two FR subsections (and I could have gotten those with more studying).

The only reason I ask is because, as I've said, some of my acquaintances are retaking 1A and 1B for their GPAs.

i see what your saying about the gpa, but i guess it's a personal choice you have to make. actually calc 3 in general is not that hard, but maybe math 53 goes into much more detail than most calc 3 classes? idk

i have no ideas about the curves, sorry, anyone know?
