Advice for me to get into a boarding school??

Hey, so I tried to apply to Blair Academy last year at around June for the 2011-2012 (i know it was really late). I'm trying to apply to Mercersburg, Hotchkiss and Lake Forest (not sure if i should apply to Peddie too) for grade 11 2012-2013. I HAVE HAVE to get into a boarding school next year, so i can't take chances... So please HELP!!

I took the SSAT last year without any prepare(soo stupid) and got a 46% on verbal, 81% on Math, 51% on reading and a 63% average( i failed:( ). I'm taking the SSAT again in Dec.10 and i just took the PSAT in school.

I was a straight A student last year but i didn't take any honors. I've got three Honors now. My Course is:
Algebra II/Trig H
English II H
Global History II H
French II
Sculpture I
Physics
I'm in grade 5 for piano, got awards in painting and drawing, play tennis in JV right now, play field hockey and swim too. Got a 25% scholarships for the annual fee when i was in a private school in South Africa.
I grew up in three countrie: South Africa( I was born there, but now i'm a US citizen), China and USA. Travelled a whole lot(don't know if that helps).

So here's pretty much my resume, please give me some advice. And tell me if there's any schools that i'll be 100% sure to get in.

If you “have to” get into boarding school for next year, you’d better get to [Boarding School Review](<a href=“Boarding School Search Results”>Boarding School Search Results) and find yourself some schools to apply to with much higher acceptance rates than Hotchkiss. There’s nothing wrong with applying to Hotchkiss . . . but no one, no matter how qualified, can ever be sure of getting into a school that’s that selective! I don’t know that admission rates for Mercersburg and Lake Forest, and I’m not going to look them up - that’s your job. just be sure that you’re applying to several schools with high admission rates.

None of us can tell you if you will or won’t get into any particular school . . . but I think that anyone who’s spent any time on this forum at all can tell you how risky it is to assume you’ll get in to a certain school . . . and not hedge your bets.

If you have to get into boarding school, and have to get into 11th grade (not the easiest year - since the class by then is usually practically filled already), then you should apply to more than 3 schools . . . and start studying for the SSAT!

(Although, if you did well on the PSAT, that’s generally accepted for 11th grade applicants in place of the SSAT.)

Thank you for the advise. I did look at the acceptance rate, Mercerburg has a 37%, and Lake Forest a 53%. I am studying really hard for the SSAT everyday, especially vocabulary.

My concern would be that three schools just isn’t that many. If you don’t mind staying where you are, then it’s fine, but if you really are adamant that you want to be in boarding school next year, then I’d suggest broadening your parameters a bit. In theory, you should be okay, but I’d probably add another school or two to your list, just to be on the safe side. It sounds daunting, but the added security may be worth it.

I’ve added Peddie to my list too. And I tried to apply to George School last year but than they didn’t have any spaces left so i still have my application fee in that school, so George might as well be one of the choices too.

George is one of my personal favorites, so that seems like a great choice!

Y’know, if the application fees are an issue, you might want to see if you’re eligible for a waiver at one or more of the schools you’re applying to. If you’re a financial aid candidate, it’s a possibility.

Along with George & Peddie, consider Westtown (another Quaker School in PA).

I have a question similar to that I am applying to Deerfeild, Hotchkiss, and Taft
