Advice for new students at UCSC-declaring your major

I am currently in my first year at UCSC and wanted to pass along some information that might be helpful.

If you happen to get a letter from them after admission saying that because of your good grades and test scores you will automatically be admitted to your chosen major - BEWARE - you MUST fill out some papers as soon as possible in your first quarter with your department Advisors or you will LOSE this status. The papers are to DECLARE YOUR MAJOR. The letter you receive does not mention this fact. If you do not do the paperwork to declare your major then you will be subject to other conditions like minimum GPA, etc. There is a deadline to do this that may vary according to your department but I would suggest doing it asap and not waiting. Contact your advising dept. as soon as you arrive to start getting this done! Just wanted to pass that along in case if helps someone.

Great advice, meethtemets. The habit of doing something as soon as possible rather than waiting applies to quite a bit more than just this scenario as well. I found myself to be quite the procrastinator in my early college years. lol

Thanks for the advice. I’m a student here majoring in Computer Engineering and I got admitted straight to the major. I knew it was purposed but I didn’t know about the status. I did pretty well in my first quarter but yeah I should have a talk with my advisors or research more about this

Ty for the info :)
