Any advice for out of state freshman?

this would be so nice for someone to answer. i’m from new york, and some advice regarding academics or financial aid would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a dorm that is better for students that wont be going home for the weekend?

My brother goes to Rutgers and absolutely loves it there! The most popular dorms on the New Brunswick campus are on College Ave. That was his first choice his freshman year. He ended up living in the Livingston dorms and was still happy. He said that College Ave can get loud at times and that Livingston was quieter. I don’t know much about the other dorms, but I hope this helps.

Well, im In state but i will give out advice to out of state. Well best campus in academics and everything is New Brunswick so go there. financial aid is a bit tough because it will cost you guys $20,000 but if you did your fasfa before March 15 (priority date) you will be considered for additional help. in sum for financial aid im not too sure so get that info from your counselors. Now dorming is really good for out of state people who won’t be able to go home on weekends. in New Brunswick there is a whole lot to do (Urban area) and the campus of New Brunwick itself is huge plus you can take a train to NYC its only like 20-30 mins. you are not that far from philly too. Now which campus is more entertaining- College ave because its in the city of new brunswick so you have a lot to do. Livingston is more of a rural area and Bush is kind of both urban and rural.
Hope i answered some of you questions!

not to nitpick pyrokaos but the train ride to new york is more like 45 - 60 minutes. i wouldn’t really call livingston or busch rural. there’s not enough green there to qualify them as such, just a bunch of buildings. I would refer to cook or douglass as rural.

^ Train ride to NYC is 60-70 minutes. I can definitely confirm that since I take the train to Penn Station every Friday afternoon. =D

And for any advice, be more specific! There are so many things one can say about Rutgers! What do you want to know about? The five NB campuses? Clubs? Dining Hall food? Weekends? Dorms? Classes? Etc.

Ask away! No matter how many questions =)

The fastest train during the week takes 46 minutes but usually takes close to 6o. Go here, [New Jersey Transit](http://www.njtransit.com/sf/sf_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=TrainTo), and select new Brunswick to New York Penn.

What are weekends like? Do most in-staters leave?

A tour guide just told us freshmen can bring cars in September. One of the web pages states you need to have 24 credits before you can park.

Anyone studying bio, biotech or plant science? Any comments on the quality of those programs?

Thanks to all - your info definietely helps. My daughter is attending NB in the Fall. I’m glad there will be things for her to do on the weekends since we live too far for her to go home.

I do have a few more questions…

How much is a good amount for the RU debit card?

Is there a way for students to get to grocery stores or Target if they don’t have a car?

We will be visitng soon for academic advising. What do we definitely need to see while we are on campus?

Thanks in advance for your help!

What are weekends like? Do most in-staters leave?** Weekends during the morning and afternoon are pretty quiet. People do tend to go home, but there are a lot of people who stay on campus as well, but are cooped up in their dorms. They come out of hiding in the evening and night time =)**

A tour guide just told us freshmen can bring cars in September. One of the web pages states you need to have 24 credits before you can park. I just found out that they changed the rules for this school year. Freshmen were not allowed to bring cars on campus their first semester unless they had 24 credits incoming or other special circumstances. But now they are allowed to have a car with no restrictions.

How much is a good amount for the RU debit card? ** It depends. If you have your own credit/debit card, I’d say just stick to the minimum $10.00. Considering that you’ll be required to have at least 210 meal swipes (which is A LOT – I had 40 left over at the end of first semester. And it doesn’t carry over to the next semester), perhaps you’ll spend less time eating outside. I suggest maybe around $50.00 if you know you’ll want to grab a bite to eat. The RU debit card is used at many places around New Brunswick. I got extremely excited when the new Chipotle Mexican Grill on George Street took the debit card, haha =)**

Is there a way for students to get to grocery stores or Target if they don’t have a car? If you take the 810 NJ transit bus near the train station, for $2.15 you can access a local Walmart and Costco in Edison (about 25 minutes away) or a Target at Menlo Park Mall (about 40-50 minutes away), on the same route. Oh yeah, and if your daughter gets bored, she can get a friend or two and go to Menlo Park Mall to hang out. They have a lot of stores, a movie theatre, a Barnes and Noble, a Cheesecake factory, and a Target across the parking lot. We have a C-Town nearby that can be access taking the campus bus en route between College Avenue and Douglass. It’s across the street from Rockoff Hall, which is the high rise apartments for upperclassmen

We will be visiting soon for academic advising. What do we definitely need to see while we are on campus? Hmm…this is a toughie. Do you mean as in “attractions” or “people”? Perhaps try and visit the campus that your daughter is thinking of dorming at. Also, probably see if you can get in contact with someone in the academic department that you’re daughter is interested in pursuing. Take a stroll around the College Avenue especially near the academic classrooms over on Voorhees Mall (across from the Grease Trucks). Although I don’t know how much time you will have, considering they have a day long orientation program for the parents. But you’ll get free food (as my parents told me)

Thanks very much!

Thanks! Great advice!
