advice for people who score 500~ on cr

I know alot of people have trouble on the verbal part so if you score in the 500 range, this is for you i guess. On my psat's junior year, i got 53 on the verbal. First time i took sat's i got 500. On the second time i got 610 and out of all the practice tests i've taken, i think the highest i ever got was a 640. But by the third time i got 670. I know 670 isn't that great but if you score in the 500's, 670 is a big improvement. what i did to improve: read books and magazines. thats it. i looked over the high frequency vocab list like once with 100 words or something, but that was it. i've realized the best way to study for the cr isn't memorizing 500 words, buying those prep books or grammatrix (which i've never done) but actually just reading. i'm pretty sure those who score in the 700 range read books when you guys were young, which i didnt at ALL . just start to read and the passages will get easier and the questions will seem alot clear. hope that helps to those who score in the 500 range. i guarentee you will raise your verbal to the 600's if u just read.

In the latest SAT I got a 530 reading and 680 math. Theres such a big gap. English isnt my first language so that might explain it but still, i read a lot of books as you said...I guess its time to increase the amount.

Thanks for the advice.

My CR and Math scores have a big gap between them as well...would you recommend any books that have helped you?

you should read the new yorker. i started to read it a little bit at the library and i think it sorta helped. i also know this kid who got 800 on the writing and verbal and he is subscribed to the new yorker along with this other kid at my school who got 760 on the verbal. but you cant just read it. you have to really think about it. while you read, make up potential cr questions with the passages.

for math, i raised my 650 to 800 by bascially reading the directions more carefully and not rushing. i think that's basically the key to doing good on math. the questions aren't hard and i think everyone knows it. hope that helps.

oh yeah, and eating breakfast, sleeping early and waking up early is a REALLY important part. alot more than you guys may think...

I scored 410 Verbal in 7th grade (talent search)
550 CR PSAT 9th grade
530 CR PSAT 10th grade (yes, I dropped?)
640 CR SAT 11th (Jan 2007:))

Not sure what happened..:D I didn't particularly read much (well, I also took and finished 3 online classes between Dec06 and Jan07[take online classes, they're fun], where I really had to scan books/online text to understand, get the right answers, without help of SparkNotes, making me actually think xD)

doing well on math :)

"oh yeah, and eating breakfast, sleeping early and waking up early is a REALLY important part. alot more than you guys may think..."

Ahh, I remember January 26th, cramming 'til 11PM, waking up at 5AM, go to McDonald's, then good to go for the SAT :D

To improve your CR

Introduction: I went from a 620 (Nov. 2006) to a 740(Jan 2007) with these steps

Look at the first question first.

Take peaks at the other questions while you read the passage

Answer and go.

Answer the overall passage questions last.

You will be done with plenty of time left to check over work. (It worked for me).

THINK ABOUT IT: I IMPROVED BY 120 POINTS!!!!! YOU CAN TOO!!!!!!!!!!
