Advice for Rejected Early Decision Applicants?

As you can probably tell from my username, I applied early decision to trinity college in ct. I was rejected yesterday, and i'm pretty upset.

Any advice for getting over it? Is it appropriate to email admissions and ask why I was flat out rejected? I thought it was a little bit of a high match, but I thought I might be at least deferred. Another thing to mention is that I needed a lot of aid. Is it possible that I was rejected due to my income?

One more thing. Are appeals unheard of at selective liberal arts institutions? I can't imagine myself going to college anywhere else.

It’s inappropriate for you to ask, your GC may be able to ask, though they are likely to get the standard answers.

With an outright reject, there probably is no appeal. Deferral, maybe, but again, it would take a GC with a powerful connection to the school and/or your school being a HS that Trinity needs to deal with in the future, i.e. a major feeder.

You need to get back on the horse and start writing more app essays, even if it’s painful. D got a deferral from Bowdoin, as I’ve written, an acceptance from Case, and got her ED2 essay submitted to her GC this afternoon. It’s been a roller coaster, but Jan. 1 looms. Mourn, get over it, start writing tomorrow.

My D1 was rejected at her early admission school a few years ago. She still ended up at a college she loved and did really, really well there. The same can happen for you. It seems hard now, but this is why you make a list of reaches, matches, and safeties to apply to.

If you feel uncomfortable because you thought this was a match, you might want to add another safety to your list. Also, if you haven’t had someone else review your essays, you might do that – just get a second set of eyes on it for typos, anything that doesn’t make sense to an outsider reader in terms of syntax, etc. You could ask your GC to review a printed version of your common app and see if they recommend re-wording or changing anything – sometimes things come across differently to an admissions committee than they seem to you when you fill it out.

Do not worry–looks like you were accepted at Fordham. My best guy friend in medical school went to Fordham undergrad and aced his courses there and is a very successful MD. Where else did you apply? Any others you could convert to ED II?

@nervedoctor,

Unfortunately fordham is most likely out of reach due to financial aid. I’m applying to BU, St. Lawrence and UConn, but from now on my decisions will be made based upon who gives the most aid.

bumppppppp

If your decision depends on financial aid, scratch BU.
