Advice for Rice

In response to "how hard is it to get into Rice?", here's a ranking of acceptance rates for 2004: <a href="http://collegeapps.about.com/od/rankings/a/u_acceptance.htm%5B/url%5D">http://collegeapps.about.com/od/rankings/a/u_acceptance.htm</a></p>

Rice was 24%, right below Washington University and above Duke.

Based on the Rice website, though, the acceptance rate for 2004 was 22%. So...it's somewhere around there! You can compare the acceptance rates for in state versus out of state using the data here (for 2004): <a href="http://collegeapps.about.com/od/rankings/a/u_acceptance.htm%5B/url%5D">http://collegeapps.about.com/od/rankings/a/u_acceptance.htm</a></p>

Hope that helps!

Well, I'd like to see the variance of the statistics if anything. The last thing I imagine the college admissions will do is sit down with the previous years statistics and try to to match them. Sure, they have target goals of what sort of class they want, but it cannot be that cut out.

there is correlation between admittance to rice and EC's

here they are:

community service involvement:: 465
varsity athletes: 375
club/organisation presidents: 249
multilingual: 197
drama/debate participants: 149
student government members:145
research experience: 90
class presidents: 41
boys/girls scouts participants: 24
editors-in-chief (yearbook and newspaper): 21
published authors 13
student council presidents: 29

you can be optimist and be yourself. but just being charismatic isnt going to get you in. as you see. when the stats get really low the admittance is really low. im not saying you cant be one of those people but make sure you do your best at everything to make your applicaiton shine.

Isn't it actually becoming more difficult to get into Rice every year? I bet that their acceptance rate still declines even when/if they increase their size. I read a CNN article that stated that schools in the south are becoming some of the post popular in the nation. Early decision for this year increased the most for the southern schools. I know Rice received 15% more ED applications than it did last year. Also Vanderbilt and Emory were up quite a bit as well.

yes...the admission process to rice i think will get harder every year as the school acquires more prestiege than it already has. the south is appealing because of the weather

That's actually funny. I found the weather in Chicago to be appealing. I think I am most nervous about adapting to Houston temperature next year. It should be interesting especially since most of my wardrobe consists of sweaters and jackets.

Yea get a ton of t-shirts!

The weather in Houston is so fickle. One day I was up in my balcony (hell yeah, I have a balcony) during Thanksgiving, I think, studying. It was a pleasant day with a bit of a breeze. Within 2 hours of studying econ (yeah, right, more like napping), it suddenly started raining. For 2-3 days afterwards, the temperature was below 10 degrees celsius.

What were the stats on the ECs part?

I'm with hummer on that - the weather is completely ridiculous. I was walking to philosophy class once, and it was about 66, gentle breeze, a few clouds - perfect weather. As lecture got out an hour later, it was raining torrentially...trees were bending in the wind, rain was blowing sideways, thunder...I was really confused.

It's called a cold front. And it's not that strange.

Yeah, but usually you don't expect the weather to PMS like that - some weeks, it just swings back and forth from incredibly warm to below 30.

It is actually pretty strange, especially if you come from a place where the weather more or less stays constant during seasons.

Well, just to give you guys advanced warning, Houston is pretty freaky when it comes to weather. A few days ago, you could wear shorts outside. Yes, that's right. In the middle of December. Right now, it's nice and cool outside. Then again, Houston is the kind of place where it can be freezing when you wake up, yet warm up to a nice, toasty 80+ degrees by the end of the day. Don't get me started on the rain...LOL

this is texas weather. i hate it...i came from colorado, which is beautiful weather...minus winter weather. and then texas. it's like getting hit by a bus...i hate it.. haha

are we all meteorologists here? i love the fickle weather. it keeps you guessing.

Sorry to burst in on this conversation, but check a load of this:

7andre7 already wrote on the Northwestern board:

"hey! I am a high school junior who is already stressing out about college. I talked to my counselor and she suggested researching Northwestern as a possible school. I would love to major in biology and was wondering if Northwestern would be the right place. What else do you guys find so appealing about Northwestern?"

Sound familiar? This guy's been going around, posting the EXACT same message on the boards of Duke, Georgetown, Emory, etc.

And then in his next post:

"Addition

SENIOR classes. This guy is actually a senior, NOT a junior, who's proabably going around, posing as one to get ideas for his "why rice" or "why northwestern" essays.
