Advice for SAT II Physics - timing of test after AP Physics 1

I am taking AP Physics 1. Our teacher let us know he will not cover material outside of the AP test. Is there enough time to self study the extra material before the June SAT test date or should I wait until August? Can anyone share their experiences?

Thank you

You’re learning about half the test on your own. So it depends on when you start and how much time you have to devote without impacting your classes/ECs. If you start now (or soon),June is doable. If you plan to start after the AP exam, it’s probably not going to happen.

Thank you - that is very helpful

So, funny story (well my kid did not find it super funny at the time). After doing AP Physics 1 I thought that the Physics subject test would be OK to do so I registered. Then my husband informed me that the AP Physics 1 covers about 40% of what is testing in the Physics subject test. Oops. Kid sat the AP Physics 1 (got a 4, believes missed the 5 by blowing one question). Sat the June Physics subject test after doing 3 x 3 hour prep classes. Kid was somewhat amused that I had signed up for test but since we paid our money decided to indulge me - I figured can always take it again. Got a 750. Will take it again as is doing AP Physics C this year so hopefully will have covered the majority of the topics tested. I guess if you want the 800 you may need more prep that the 3 weeks of light prep my kid had

So a couple of things.

I’m impressed that your husband knew that. Not that he’s not intelligent - I’m sure he is - but the average parent is not really in tune with material on a Subject Test

Congrats to your kid on the 750. Unless s/he aiming for super-reachy engineering schools, I’m not sure a 750 is worth the retake. I’m not sure it’s worth it even for the super-reachy schools.

AP Physics C will not cover all the topic, although it will cover more than AP Physics 1. But having take a real test, presumably kid knows what sections to learn on own.

@skieurope - Yes, I know right lol. Husband is a geeky math / science guy with current knowledge so it was clear to him reasonably quickly my error  I made an assumption lol. Won’t be doing that again. Kid is looking at super reachy engineering so the 750 is a bit borderline. I think will evaluate towards end of year to see how kid feels. Has Math 2 (800) done so just needs the science angle covered.

@pjreil It is super doable. I maybe spent a month with like 3 hours of practice a week. I think I started studying after the AP 1 exam lol so yeah you’re fine. The subject test is so much easier than AP 1 (that class was TORTURE) because it’s conceptual and there really is no math. @GlobalFencingMom Like the moderator said, Physics C really does not cover material from the subject test, Physics 2 does. Also, Math 2 is irrelevant because it is a conceptual test (in fact there is no calculator allowed because you do almost no math on it aside from like rearranging equations in terms of variables). For context, my dream school is Carnegie Mellon (literally competes with MIT for CS students) and I’m submitting a 750 physics.
