advice for SAT

i am planning to sit for SAT this Jan, yet i am not sure of it. i might give it next Oct. well i have a list of problems with my SAT. hope u guys would help me.

my vocab is not that good .i hate reading novels, but have started reading magazines(like Time) and biographies. do you really think that would help me in my SAT. i got 580 in CR without preparing in my first attempt ; that was 1 year back i guess. since then i have been studying the Princeton Review book. i wonder how is the Barron's Sat Prep book?

the essay is another major problem for me because i am not that good at writing. what do you think i should do? will i be able to prepare myself in 6 months???? i am really scared.plz help me.

Your main resource should be the CollegeBoard Official SAT Study Guide. If you do all 8 or 11 practice tests in there, sign up for the CollegeBoard SAT Online Course to get more practice tests. Doing practice exams is the best way to improve on the SAT.

Reading Time magazine and biographies is useful, but it doesn’t help enough with vocabulary. You get a general impression of what a word means based on the context it is used in. However, it is much better to get a more exact definition. Direct Hits is very good for vocabulary.

Don’t use the Barron’s SAT prep book. RocketReview is pretty good with tips and strategies, particularly the writing and CR section. If RocketReview still isn’t enough, you can always try Barron’s SAT 2400, which is focused on hard questions.

As for the essay, just remember a few books of merit and learn some history. I don’t know if you are International cause your location is Asia, but the books don’t have to be English books. They can be from whatever language you know. Practice writing some essays. The easiest way to get points is length (fill up the 2 pages as best as possible) and use at least 2 examples.

thank u so much
