Advice for the winter?

The thing i hear most about NU's bad side is the winter. Winter = death. got it.

I'm from SoCal where the weather is almost alway near perfect (and cheerfully, painfully boring at times). What clothes/methods can anyone recommend? I've heard UGG boots are good as a lot of girls get them..

I would recommend:

1.Smart wool socks (warm comfortable and come in cute patterns)
2. Silk long underwear (comfortable and you can wear them under tighter clothes without adding bulk).
3.GOOD gloves, and a GOOD coat. In fact, I would wait to buy them in Illinois. When I lived in California the selection and WARMTH factor just didn’t compare to that in upstate NY where I live.
4. Wool sweaters are very, very warm. LL Bean is a good source.
5. Boots with a good tread for snowy and icy days. Again, wait and buy them once you get to school. Then you can get what is stylish AND appropriate for winter weather.
6. Get used to the idea of a hat. There are some really cute ones in all styles. I don’t know if it is cool in college circles but on a cold, windy day a hat can make your life and ears happier.

The first year will be your coldest. You get used to it eventually. My kids run around in 50 degree weather in bare feet and shorts because they grew up in cold weather. Californians are just not used to it! And snow is a lot of fun when you didn’t get to grow up with it!

As a fellow socal’er and current NU student, I agree with Jamiecakes. You will probably share my sadness when you find out that flipflop weather is September-midoctober, then sporadic days starting in April and late March through June. Its not necessary to wait to come to school, just look for “warmest jacket” by like LL Bean or North Face or something. But definitely you want a hat/beanie, gloves, wool socks.

Boots/Wellingtons/Uggs with traction are very useful for a few weeks out of the year but aren’t as important the rest of the year, whereas youll be using the previously mentioned stuff for most of it. And as a guy, I can’t attest to how silk long underwear compares to the rest, but I just use my thermals that I had for backpacking and they are fine. I never really liked using scarves but you can use them for outfits if you want. Good luck!

Does anybody know what the wardrobe would be like for a guy? Not to sound stupid or anything, but I’m from W. Texas, so all we really have is summer and fall…

Same thing. Beanie, gloves, wool socks, winter coat, and long underwear some days

From what I’ve heard, the standard Northwestern girl look is Ugg boots and a North Face jacket. Actually… basically everyone at Northwestern has one of those denali North Face jackets. It’s up to you whether you want to conform or create your own look.
