Advice for transferring from a CCC to UC Berkeley Computer Science?

I am a freshman at a CCC, and I am hoping to transfer to UCB for L&S Computer Science in the future. Is there any successful transfers that have any advice?

If so, what grades did you get in your major prerequisites? GPA? Where did you transfer from?

No CCCs nearby offer any classes equivalent to the 61A-61B-61C series. If I can, should I take 61A as a visiting US college student?

Of course I will apply to other UCs, but I really want to get into Berkeley!

If you are admitted as a transfer to L&S, you need to complete CS 61A, CS 61B, and CS 70 with a minimum GPA of 3.30 to enter the L&S CS major: http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/csugrad/#petitioning

If you want to prepare as well as possible to transfer to UCB for L&S CS, you should take 61A over the summer as a visiting U.S. college student, and also take courses equivalent to 61B. For example, Foothill College offers their 1ABC series entirely online, and many other CCCs do as well.

The CCs with the best coverage are Laney (CS 61A and 61B) and Diablo Valley (CS 61B and 61C).

Foothill only offers partial CS 61B (Foothill CS 1C or 2C).

Yes, if you take CS 61A and CS 70 at Berkeley during a summer session, the grades you earn in those courses can give you a good idea of where you stand with respect to admission to the L&S CS major if you are admitted as a transfer student to L&S.

@goldenbear2020 Thanks for the advice :> Some CCCs close by my college actually offer a course equivalent to 61B, but just partial credit. Nevertheless, I’ll try to take it if my schedule allows me to in the future. Guessing from your username, are you a current UCB student? Have you taken summer classes there before?

@ucbalumnus Thank you for mentioning Laney and Diablo Valley!! Although I live too far away to drive to one of them regularly, now that I know about them I will consider taking their equivalent classes during the summer or online if they offer them.

My only concern with taking a summer class at UCB now is if I can afford it…
