advice for when you have a GSI with a really thick accent?

I can barely understand my GSI lol...only a few select words, and the rest of the sentence sounds like mumbling.

unfortunately, for this class, participation is heavy...and those select few who can manage to understand him answer most questions. if i can understand one question, i jump on it and answer it...but most of his words are not really understandable (at least to me and others, except the select few i mentioned).

what to do in this case?

I would sit near the front to hear better. I guess you can also “participate” by asking the GSI to clarify what s/he just said.

haha. get used to it if youre staying in berkeley.

i am usually pleasantly surprised when i do manage to get a gsi that can speak somewhat comprehensible english…its more of the norm for me (or maybe its just my classes) to get more gsi’s that speak meh english. haha.

maybe you could also try going to the gsi’s OH and asking if he wouldn’t mind enunciating more carefully. if you ask in a nice, tactful way, he wont get offended since it is his job after all to make sure you understand the material…
