I am currently a sophomore in high school, and I have a couple of questions for current Cal Poly students, because it’s one of the schools that I really really aspire to go to after I graduate…

I heard that Cal Poly would be a good choice for people who wanted to work in the business fields, which is something that I want to do… That or computer science.

Errm so a little facts about me:

Cumulative GPA: around 3.7
Honors L.A. 9/10
Honors World History I - IV
Currently in Math 2- I barely get A’s in this class, so I don’t take honors.
Will take IB classes for 11-12

Occ. Ed. Classes:

Banking & Credit

Accounting I

World of Finance - I’m signed up for this for 11th grade

Clubs/Groups:

Zoo Corps

I.B. Club

Key Club - Only for Freshmen year, since my school doesn’t have it anymore.

Filipino Club - Errrm maybe… Haven’t decided yet lol.

Other
I’ve been using Macromedia Fireworks for about 3 years now, so I am a graphic artist (not graphic designer though)

So does anyone have any tips? Am I on the right path so far? I heard Cal Poly is really hard to get into… Is my GPA too low? I read this at the Cal Poly website “are in the top 5-10% of their graduating class” and it kind of worried me…

cal poly doesnt really look at extracurricular activities n such that much
so just concentrate on your gpa and sat scores
and junior yr's gpa is really important

I'm a senior currently and applied to cal poly slo for Fall 2007 and got in suprisingly; what I got in with (prepare for a big suprise):

Major : Computer engineering (gonna switch to EE; probably wouldn't have gotten in if I applied as EE since EE is the hardest engineering major)
GPA: My calculations were 3.33 weighted according to CSU/UC.
Background: Did I.B. from Freshmen to Junior year and quit Senior year just because I realized I didn't need it. I wasn't in any clubs. I did service hours but those don't actually matter. I didn't do any sports, actually did swimming but quit before it could be counted (too much to handle). I'm more of a computer person (3D Artist). Clubs and service hours are not even looked at at all. I took the hardest classes freshmen and sophmore year (all honors, prepping for IB) for pre-IB and did all IB classes Junior year (which was my worst academic record of all) where 1st semester I got all C's and 2 B's and 2nd semester more B's than C's but still no A's during Junior year. I more of those lazy smart students. I'm in top 15% of my class. Seriously IB, IMHO is not worth it unless going to a very competitive school like USC, UCLA, Ivy League, MIT, CalTech, etc. or out of country or you just want to challenge yourself. Also for AP classes, they are not the same as college classes no matter how it's taught in high school. AP tests are hard for a reason - to make sure you really did get an "AP" class. Cal Poly is mainly for engineering, if you want to do business might consider other schools. I also got into Pomona if that's any relevant. However I consider myself lucky.

My advice: keep studying smart and keep those grades high. CSU's focus only on GPA and classes. Service hours, extracurricular, clubs, recommendations, are not mentioned at all.

Thanks everyone! :) I didn't know they didn't look at clubs/ec. I also want to try to go to NYU & Stanford, but I seriously doubt I would get in.

So thanks it looks like I will be having no life for my junior year lol. Some people told me GPA doesn't even matter.

-The gpa is a just a tad low. Try to get it up to around 3.85.

-The average SAT for admittance to the the business program is a 1260. Try to wreck shop on the SAT, as it's rather important for cal poly.

-Clubs, etc. ARE part of the admission formula, so don't forget about them. You have to put down how many hours per week you spend on extracurriculars.

It looks like you're doing well, so keep it up. As another poster has said, Junior year is very important.

Wow!! how did the heck did you get in? That gpa is very low. Well congratulations man. The admissions office must have been looking at AP or ECs or something else. The average gpa for admitted student is around 3.8 and the average SAT score is 1280.

I think you should be fine. I got in as a business major for this fall and am going to a UC instead, but my stats were similar to yours. I got in with a 3.75 GPA and an 1800 on the SAT (1190 math +verbal). Two of my friends applied to the same major and had higher GPA's (4.1 and 3.9) and SAT scores (1900, 1930) and were rejected.

I probably got in because my EC's were significantly better than theirs. Granted, my GPA and SAT scores are lower than the average for Cal poly's business school, but I guess you could say I was a more well rounded student.

Anyway, just keep the grades up, do well on the SAT, and volunteer, get a job or internship and you'll give yourself a good shot at getting in.
