A couple of months ago I was automatically accepted to the University of Texas (Austin). However, I have not yet been notified of my degree path. I’m certain that once the application deadline (Dec. 1) passes, I’ll be notified within the following month or two of my major. The thing is, I’m not yet certain on the path I want to follow. I’m stuck between Computer Science and Environmental Science, Computer Science currently listed as my first choice. I’ll list out the pros and cons, or at least my feelings on each, and I’d love to receive some feedback on what you guys think sounds like the best choice.
To begin with, I’ve wanted to create video games for a good while now. I’ve loved them growing up, and knowing the impact they’ve had on my life, I’d love to create them just as well. However, I don’t yet know how to code, which has me kind of nervous about taking UT’s Computer Science degree path, a well-regarded and challenging program. On top of that, though I’d love to create video games, I don’t yet know if sitting in an office, working late hours and typing code is the best fit for me. On one hand, I love the comfortability of knowing that a Computer Science degree is very employable and could lead to me creating video games, but I also have a strong passion for helping the earth and going outdoors, both of which align more so with an Environmental Science degree path.
Furthermore, the Earth-Science program at UT is well-regarded, and I’ve heard wonderful testimonials from friends that have been involved in the program. The atmosphere sounds wonderful, and the hands-on, outdoors experiences sound amazing. The earth and its surrounding science is very interesting to me. My concern is that one, I don’t yet know what career I’d pursue out of college with this degree, and two, I don’t yet know if I should let go of Computer Science. I can’t tell if I’ll find these courses much more wonderful and fulfilling than the Computer Science path, or if letting go will be a mistake.
I don’t know what to do. Thus, I have Computer Science as my first choice, since it’s the harder of the two programs to get in to.
Please share any advice and testimonial down below. The application deadline is in 3 days (Dec. 1), and it usually takes about a day or two to request and have an approved major change. Thank you!
