As College admittances roll in, what is your best advice on how to choose a college to commit to? Thank you in advance (hope I’m in correct forum).
If cost is a factor, compare costs with your budget.
If your major is popular, check if you have direct admission to your major; if not, check h I will difficult declaring it is.
First look at costs and academics. After that consider personal fit which can be anything else you care about no matter how trivial it may seem (ex. Greek Life, big time sports, size or school, location of school etc.). All things being equal trust your gut feeling.
Make a spreadsheet with all the things you care about, like what @happy1 listed. Put the colleges in rows and the different things that matter in the columns ranked by importance. It’s a lot easier to visualize pros and cons imo.
^^ Be sure you don’t just go with the school that has the most checks. Think hard and consider what things are most important to you. And again, don’t discount gut feel.
@happy1 You can always have a column named “gut feel”
But totally don’t discount gut feel.
Do an overnight at your top choices and imagine yourself at each place.
I do think there are people who approach this too scientifically – looking to check every box but ignoring things like “tI just feel comfortable at XYZ school” or “I feel like I can relate to the people I met at XYZ campus.” I don’t thing gut feel is more meaningful than some pragmatic factors such as affordability or academics, but all things being equal, it should not be ignored.
