Advice needed...didn't pass math 16b? :(

So I got perfects on the midterms, but the final was really hard and didn't think i would end up with a D :(.

I was thinking of switching to a major that requires math 1b, and I was wondering if taking MATH 1b will replace a deficient grade in math 16b. I know this sounds crazy but I WILL work my butt off to do well in math 1b....i know i underestimated 16b..

Any advice is good. Thanks in advance! :)

Yeah, that final was quite difficult but expected since the midterms were ridiculously easy.

I don’t think taking 1B would be ideal. It’s a lot harder than the 16 series and there really is no point. I’d retake 16B next semester.

And did you really tank the final after getting perfects on the midterms? It’s kind of hard to believe. The final was difficult but doable given the amount of time we had.

omg im so sorry. I just didn’t pass one of my classes either w.tf. JEEEEEEZ. I hate these effing professors and the way they grade. give us a break. can at least get us through college.

Dang which lecture are you in? Is that grade before/after the curve? I got below 50% and still managed to get a B+. Are you sure there isn’t a mistake?

@ Pixel…how did you find out your score on the final?

Im in the first lecture and I thought I did enough to get some points on the final to AT LEAST get a B. but my overall grade was a D…I’ll email my GSI

My GSI posts our grades on bSpace. I think you should email your GSI then… I think they ended up letting the GSIs decide your grade b/c my friend’s GSI graded her exam out of 40 (to which she got 29) on. She ended up getting a B (with Bs on her two midterm).

I think the grading distribution is really screwed up… If my 70/160 = some sort of a 80-85% (which explains my B+ based on my section/mt grades), then you should have at least passed the course…

Sigh, Jenny Harrison… making life so difficult for us behind her computer screen.

At least math is over now. ^___^

Yeah… Words can’t describe how much I resent her…

Retaking 16B will replace your deficient grade. Both grades will be listed on your transcript, but only the higher grade will be counted in your GPA.

I will be taking Math16b and Calculus is not my strongest area. May I ask who was your GSI and any GSI is good that you know about?

@kchen: So IF i get an A in math 1b (just if)…I shouldn’t bother retaking math 16b because my math 1b A grade will replace the deficient grade and count towards my GPA.

Ask the Math Department about replacing a deficient grade in 16B with 1B.

Keep in mind though that Math1B has one of the highest failing rates at Cal.

I do not understand this thread. I was under the impression that math16 series were supposed to be easy (like pie).

It is easy. (even easier if you took Calculus in high school)

@Imagine: did you ask your GSI/professor to double check your grade? Sometimes they mess up on the grades

It’s easy, no doubt. If got a 4-5 on AP AB/BC, you’ll get at least a B+. Not hard at all (16A barely touched differentiation, no trig or integration; 16B begins with harder differentiation, trig, integration, taylor series, and statistics).

Here’s the reason why the thread was so harsh on 16B:
[Ratings for Harrison, V C - Ninja Courses](http://ninjacourses.com/ratings/view/instructor/186/)

Hello, I am taking 16b this semester. Would you know if Maldague decently easy on gradings. Or have you heard Gavrus. Both do not have ratings on Ninja courses.

They sound new… you just gotta just risk and take it. Most of the time people usually take professors who are new/2nd time teaching the course, so you must bare with the lack of reviews.
