Advice Needed on Calculus Professors

I'm taking Calculus 125 in the fall, and have the choice between Charles Lanski and Sheldon Kamienny.

Just write the name of the teacher you would recommend, and if you feel like it, explain why.

I've seen mixed reviews on both. These are the only two that fit in my schedule, so I'd like to know which is the better option.

Thanks!

In my opinion, it is likely that you won’t learn that much from the professor and will depend on how much work you put into doing the homework (and not copying the solution manual), studying, and asking questions that you don’t understand during your discussion section.

Also, the final exam which carries significant weight is a common final between ALL MATH 125 sections so professor doesn’t matter too much regarding preparedness as whichever one you choose likely won’t resemble the individual midterms (to an extent) but instead the old finals posted below.

In the end, MATH 125 isn’t a tough class if you do the homework and understand the topics which you will have likely seen before (if you took AP Calculus I’m assuming). Lanski’s reviews seem terrible and based off ratemyprofessor, I would choose Kamienny but you do have 3 weeks to change your schedule once the semester starts.

Alright, thank you so much for the advice!

I recommend NEITHER!!! Call the Math Department to get D-Clearance to take Professors Emerson’s section. If any room opens in Professor Mikulevicius’s section, definitely sign up for his course! He is one of the best math profs in the department. I am talking from experience here as I have been at 'SC for a bit of time.

The professors you choose definitely shape your impression on a subject especially, Math (and in particular Calculus)!!! I definitely recommend looking at reviews for professors you choose at 'SC. I learned this lesson the hard way more than once.

Kamienny is VERY confusing for the lower div level. Lanski is notorious for Failing his students (mainly in the undergraduate level), so he is a very tough professor.

could you tell me more about D-clearance? Is it possible to get into courses that are already full? No open emerson courses fit in my schedule.

D-Clearance means that you have to call the Math Department (in this case) to be able to enroll in the Math 125 section (that you want) via Web Registration. It is only possible to get into courses that are full once someone drops the class. Students sometimes drop/switch classes during the 1st or 2nd week of the semester. Depending on your major, I would suggest making an easy/medium difficulty semester (i.e. the Easier Schedule: a Major class, a Math class, two GEs or the Medium Schedule: a Major class, a Math Class, Writ 140, and Cat 6).

What is your major? The coursework you choose your 1st year can vary depending on your major.

If you are trying to enroll in Cat 6, try taking Ling 115g (along with the associated Writ 140 section). I know that it is full, but if Ling 115g and a writing section for it opens up, I suggest switching to Ling 115g and the associated writing section. If you cannot switch, I hope your Cat 6 (if you’re taking it this semester, if not, you can take it next year) prof is good. I took Ling 115g with Simpson (he is teaching this course again this semester) during the Fall semester of my Junior year (delayed taking Writ 140 and Cat 6 on purpose due to major reqs).

Choosing classes with the right/good profs are critical to do well in college. This is coming from my experience as well as my friends’ experiences at 'SC.
