Since I last posted in this section, I’ve really fallen in love with U of Florida and Penn State. Other contenders include Pitt, Clemson, and U Maryland. Which of these schools would be best for pre vet? I’m planning on majoring in either bio or animal science. Cost aside, I would greatly appreciate statistics or pros and cons of each school. Thanks!
UF has a school of veterinary medicine. what state do you live in? The US vet schools accept the largest number of students from in state. States that do not have vet schools sometimes have arrangements with other states to accept a small number of their students. If you do not live in one of these states and are not at least a 4.0 undergrad GPA, your acceptance into vet school is slim at best. Students usually try to acquire residency in states with vet schools as undergrads or apply to approved schools out of the country.
Clemson also has school of veterinary medicine. What are your stats ? Clemson has become increasingly competitive over the past 2 years , especially for OOS applicants.
Clemson has an MS and PhD program, I don’t see an accredited School of Veterinary Medicine. Concentrate on a good, inexpensive undergrad. program that offers the prerequisites for vet school. Does your state offer a veterinary school? Study to obtain a VERY high GPA and and high GRE score. Save your money for vet school.
@carolinamom2boys I have a 4.52 GPA and a 2080 SAT (1360 math/cr), nothing but honors and AP classes. I’m ranked 1/236. I qualify for the honors college at Clemson. Is that good enough, or should I try to raise my stats?
In terms of Honors, the avg ACT score is 33 and SAT is 1440. They really stress ECs as well as academics for admission to Honors. My son and I went to an Honors seminar during Discover Clemson day, and the thing that was stressed heavily was everyone has similar or better stats than you, what sets you apart? I’m not saying this to discourage you, just to get you to think in those terms for your application in case you decide to apply. With your current stats you should be eligible for merit of 7500.00. If you get your stats up to 1440 or SAT of 32 , you should qualify for 15000.00. If you are a senior and seriously considering Clemson, you need to get your application in by Dec 1 to qualify . Double check that date on their website. Good luck.
@carolinamom2boys I’m not so much concerned about honors as I am getting accepted. I applied the first day it opened. As far as regular admission goes as a biology major, will I be ok? Clemson is tied for my first choice, along with U of Pittsburgh.
@ECmotherx2 I live in PA, so I have Penn’s vet school in my home state.
@ECmotherx2 I also read Clemson is the feeder to school to Mississippi State, so I’m heavily considering attending to maximize my options.
With your stats based on last year’s applicants, I do believe that you’ll get in. I’m glad that you already applied. Housing is based on application date, not acceptance date , so you should have good options . Good luck
My former coworkers husband is a vet and went to Clemson. I’ll try and find out more info for you if I can.
@carolinamom2boys that would be very helpful, thank you so much!
Mississippi State is contracted with the State of South Carolina to accept at least 5 students. Check to see if the Clemson students were residents of South Carolina.
