I recently got offered a job (a very good one, I might say). The employment is conditional on me finishing my BA, however. Right now I'm registered in the honors program and likely need to take one more class this summer to finish up the honors degree. This would push back the start date of my employment significantly and I'm not sure my potential employers would be down with that.
If I don't do the class, however, I'll simply graduate with a BA, no honors, with an extra 12 or so credits of upper level course work in my area.

So my question is how important is it that I finish the honors degree if I plan on doing grad school later? Do most schools care? What would you all suggest I do?

Especially considering that things like honors degrees start to become meaningless once you have real experience, I would take the job. Unless you think the honors degree would be integral to grad school admission (which is probably not the case), I would definitely follow psych_'s advice. And congrats!

It’s a federal job so congratulate me when I’m actually sitting down, doing work and getting paid. The feds are notoriously vague in their hiring process so I’m always prepared for an eventual gongshow.

Your advice is useful and it confirms what I was thinking. The honours curriculum was interesting and I’m glad I did it but the usefulness of having an actually “honours” degree is likely not that critical for the future. Or at least I hope not!

I have a double honors degree…and I’m doing data entry right now. I’d say take the job and don’t worry about accolades you may leave behind. Once you hit the real world, your GPA doesn’t matter, until you try to get into grad school.

I’m with the rest of the group - take the job and skip the honors program. You might try asking your college if they’d be willing to work with you. When they hear your situation, they may be willing. You’ll never know if you don’t ask.

Now, to finish you BA, depending on what kind of class you need to fulfil your last credit requirement, you may want to look into preparing to take a CLEP exam. This way you could study at home instead of having to go to class (time consuming) and then take the exam when you are ready for it. See if your school will allow this.

I did the whole honors thing and despite it being clearly printed on my resume, nobody has ever asked me about it. I would take the job and get some real experience before grad school. Best of luck.

I have to agree with everyone else - go for the job. As you start building more work experience, the details of your education will matter less and less. I don’t think graduating with honors will do anything at all after a couple of years.
