A panic-stricken parent asked me to suggest some names of colleges that offer a theatre minor, or that allow liberal arts majors to take theatre classes and perform. I realize that this is an extremely broad question! But since it's getting so late, if anyone has any comments on the following list, or has any other schools pop into their head, please
let me know... Any insight would help speed the process, and be extremely appreciated!

This student has "average" grades (couldn't get any more specific than that!).

East coast, Boston area preferred.

Medium to large school.

Allows non-theatre majors the opportunity to audition and perform.

Hofstra
Goucher

Boston College
Miami of Ohio
SUNY Fredonia
Skidmore
Drew University
Brandeis
Boston University
University of Rhode Island
University of NH

The bit I know-- U of NH might be ideal-- tons of theater classes, also dance and MT, they have minors in all these and anyone can audition. Brandeis also seems to have lots of theater for everyone (but grades would have to be well above average). A friend of D’s was thrilled to have declared a theater minor at U of Vermont recently. Another friend has Goucher as #1 and said they do TONS of productions every year. I think I’d stay away from schools with BFA’s on the idea that there would be fewer chances for BA’s and even less for minors…but someone may know better.

One question to ask is not just if students are ALLOWED to, but how LIKELY it is for students to be able to get into the classes, are they in the same classes as the majors, and how often, and in what types of productions are they often cast.

Generally speaking I would think that liberal arts schools that do not require an audition to declare the theatre major, and allow all students (regardless of major) to take the same theatre classes and audition for productions might be the best fit.

Quick emails directly to the programs asking the question in those terms should yield a relatively quick response.

Gwen and Kat - thanks for the thoughtful answers. This student is already looking into UNH, so that’s a good affirmation. And it’s a good point about steering away from schools with BFA programs, and sticking with non-audition schools.
I suspect that a high percentage of this forum’s readers are BFA and BA candidates, so a theatre minor might be off a lot of people’s radar. But if anyone has some additional thoughts, let us know!

^^ I think you’re right about this forum-- maybe try on the parents forum where there are so many people who are researching schools for all kinds of info. Good luck!

Drew does not fit on size of college - it is definitely a small school - but the opportunity to audition and perform is real. Although the known students have a better shot at the roles, I know for a fact that auditions are open and that non-theater majors are selected.
