Advice on committing to a college

Hi all,

In the next few months, there would be more admissions coming in and my D will have to make a selection by May 1. And here's our problem:

My D has had a lot of post-surgical issues (after her Sophomore year) but fortunately we are seeing some gradual improvements in her health after we took her out of the country for a herbal treatment during last summer. In fact, we went there last summer and are planning to go this summer again (right after her HS graduation). From last year's trip, we were able to get relief for 50% of her problems and we are hoping that we will get the remaining relief during this upcoming trip of ours.

The only one drawback of the treatment plan is that we are sent home with a lot of herbal medicines and the medicines take effect after it has been 1-2 months since we completed the treatment.

This being the case, my dilemma is after we submit our SIR to a college on May 1 and after we come back from our summer treatment in August, what if the doctor and we decide that she needs more time at home and is not yet ready to leave home by September. Would the college where she has submitted her SIR accept for her to stay home and take a few classes online or in a nearby college until the following semester? I mean something like deferral but at the same time, but she can be enrolled remotely so that she can go back to school as soon as she feels better ?

Have any of you dealt with such a situation or know of anybody who has and do you have any advice on what we should be doing? Should we visit the schools that she will get admitted into to specifically discuss about the situation we are in? I am so confused...and would appreciate any advice/inputs we can get to deal with a potential issue amidst these dates, etc.

FYI: She has been admitted into UCR, and 6 other schools so far but is waiting on other UCs, BU and UofM still.

Thank you.

You will need to ask the college about this. All should be willing to do a medical deferral, but I doubt many will allow her to take classes elsewhere. Online classes through her new school may be an option but the only accurate answers will come from them.

The college may be willing to allow a medical deferral and some colleges will allow a deferral for a gap year. One thing to consider about both policies is how this might affect financial aid. Some colleges will not defer some merit awards, and some will. I don’t think a college will allow classes taken at another institution. You can ask if some colleges allow a student to take online classes in their system.

Since you have already applied, at this time it is best to wait and see where your D is admitted, and contact each college for their policy before you accept a space. If the schools have different policies, then that may affect which one you choose.

Wow – had never heard of a medical deferral and that’s good to note!
Like you said, we will wait to hear from other colleges and then ask for what is each of those colleges’ policy on medical deferral? I was trying to google now and did not find much info on deferral for medical reasons. Maybe it is not that well-documented?
Thank you again!

This thread discusses the deferral policies for the UC’s. Since these can change it is best to get the information from the college.

Sometimes there is no formal published information as they consider it on a case by case basis. Situations like military or medical leave are some reasons.

Thank you so much, Pennylane2011…that link would be of great help!
