Advice on CSU to UC transfer strategy.

Hey all, I'm new and College Confidential has been very helpful.

So I'm currently a freshman at CSULB majoring in Computer Science and plan to transfer (hopefully!) to a higher-tier UC. UCB, UCLA, and UCSD namely. I've been reading around and am aware that CC to UC has the highest chances of success, with 90+% accepted transfers to the above schools being from CC's. However, I'm currently doing very well at CSULB, with a 4.0 GPA and participation in the Honors Program. I am prioritizing my GPA and transfer pre-reqs, though I have a few EC's and hope to get a tutoring job.

So assuming I do as planned, would I have a solid chance at transferring to those schools? Or would it be better to just drop out and attend a CC and apply from there? Dropping out is something that I would prefer not doing, but it light of my goals, I just want to maximize my chances of transferring.

Much thanks.

The problem is that some of your courses may not transfer over. High tier UCs are pretty strict on that. I’m a transfer student who went from a CSU to CCC because the odds were better.

You should try to look around for threads about CSU transfers to UCs.

I applied to pretty much all the UCs from SFSU for Economics with a 3.5 gpa and all prereqs completed. I got accepted to UCSD and UCSB for the fall of 2013 and am still waiting to hear back from the other schools. Everyone made it sound nearly impossible or scary to apply to a UC from a CSU, but I got into some at least! so good luck!

If you REALLY want to get out of CSULB and go to a UC, then going to a CC will give you the best chance. I had a 4.0 at SJSU my freshman year and I still didn’t feel confident applying from there, because I didn’t want to take a risk of getting rejected from most UC’s. I’m at my last semester of CC and I’m transferring this fall. Your stats are great, but like it’s been said plenty of times, a CSU transfer to a UC is very rare. You only have to go to a CC for one year if you want to go to a UC. For me, 1 year of CC for 2-3 years of a UC is definitely worth it.

I would think that a UC would want the best students they can get and a to have a GPA of 4.0 from CSULB, a four year university, is much more impressive than a 4.0 from any CC. However, the UCs have to take the position that they strongly prefer CC transfers over transfers from CSUs since CC students can only get a BS or BA by transferring while you can stay at CSULB and get a bachelors degree from a well respected university and will have no trouble finding employment.

I suspect another reason that UCs do not roll out the welcome mat for CSU transfers is because they do not want to be seen as recruiting the best students from the CSUs. You have to go to them because the UCs really can not be coming for you.

I think going to a CC is a bad idea. You will lose at least a year at a CC and your GPA in a hard subject is good enough that you do not have to TAG into a UC. Even if you are not able to transfer to a UC, you can get your BS from CSULB and be in a strong position to apply to a UC for graduate school.

I think you have a great shot at getting in to the top tier UC’s transferring out of csulb with what I read from your post.
I for one, am currently on my second year at CSU Fullerton, and i applied to transfer out to the UC’s/IVYLeagues/Stanford for fall of 2014.

So far i have been accepted into UCI,UCSB,UC Berkeley, and waitlisted for UCLA
I’ll tell you this, life hasn’t been easy for the past two years. I’ve been taking summer courses, winter courses, overloading on spring/fall courses, while maintaing a 3.9 GPA. Also I was doing a lot of extracurricular activities and had a couple internships.

I am telling you this, to let you know it’s possible, and that it does not matter what the statistics and other naysayers are telling you, all that matters is how well you think you are, and if you truly believe 2 admissions officers will read your application and be impressed.

The American Transfer Dream is Alive and Well, and I have changed the game for good. My top choice is UC Berkeley(unless i get into Stanford), as i got a full scholarship. I will be majoring in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science joint with nuclear engineering.

I hope what I was able to accomplish will inspire you and encourage you to apply and believe in yourself that you will get in, regardless of how many people tell you it’s not gonna happen.

Good luck on your academic endeavors, and let me know if you have any questions!

Hey i was reading your transfer story and it honestly shed some hope for me !!! Im an incoming freshman at CSULA majoring in computer science and im hoping to transfer in 1-2 years to either UCLA or UCI. But i wanted to still ask whats the best resource i can use to transfer successfully?? Ive seen nothing but negative comments regarding the difficulty of transferring but i feel that with the right knowledge transferring is do-able from anywhere !! I very well know my capabilities and i can get the grades but my only worry is rejection from the UC system and getting stuck in CSULA. What classes do i take? Can i take extra classes at a CC school while attending CSULA? Should i begin letting know UC schools i want to transfer and whats the best way to do it? These are questions i ask myself but have been struggling to find the answer for. If you can give me some advice, tips, or answers to my questions I’d greatly appreciate it !!! Hopefully i was able to explain my situation thanks in advanced !!
