Advice on daughter's semester (or year) leave from school

Could your daughter get a job at her old gym, teaching the younger students? Often the gyms need daytime help as the asst coaches are in high school or college classes. It would give her a job with set hours, exercise, doing something she likes.

Instead of setting hours for her, why not have her give you her schedule? I think she’d more likely stick to it if she makes it up, and I doubt she’d put down ‘coming home at 3am’ if she also put down going to work at 9 am.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and advice. I truly appreciate it.
@twoinanddone It is a possibility that she could work at the gym. One of her old teammates that took a break from college coaches the little kids. And good idea about the schedule!

Check out National Outdoor Leadership School and WOOF. I know kids in this situation who have done both. Also interning in an area of interest if affordable. In Massachusetts there is hireculture.org.

@compmom thanks! I will look into it. We definitely want to keep her busy.

Our daughter is considering taking a mental health leave from Brown. We bought the tuition insurance but upon reading it, I found it says the student is required to take a “complete withdrawal” from the university. I am not sure if this means for the semester or for good (which means she will have to reapply to come back). Does anyone have any experience with tuition insurance? Thanks!

Interesting program at BU… might be worth investigating.

Update on daughter- she’s doing better than expected, she is in therapy twice per week and has a part-time job. Sleep issues are still a big problem, but she is working on that in therapy. She (and the therapist) says she is not smoking pot, thank goodness. She says she realizes it makes her less motivated. She still has a long way to go before we are willing to send her back to college (we are thinking Spring of 2019 is the earliest she will go back), but things are looking up. Thank you, everyone for your advice! I love the CC community!

Good to hear about progress and best wishes for it to continue!
