Advice on guy's clothing for college

I'm going into the dorms and although I'm sure I can fit all my clothing into the dorm closet (more than this fits into my small closet at home) I'm packing more for 3-4 weeks instead of 2 weeks like everyone recommends. I got bored and counted everything while packing today (haha). It seems like a lot but it all fits into 3 normal packing boxes:

3 nice heavier jackets
12 sweatshirts
10 sweaters/thermals
12 flannels/collared shirts
9 jeans/pants
5 casual shorts
4 sweats/pajamas
5 gym shorts
14 pairs of shoes total (1 running, 1 cleats, 1 slippers, 3 flip flops, 8 casual)
And around 30-40 regular t shirts total.

Things to keep in mind:
*no I'm not metro. haha I'm just a normal guy who likes to dress nicely but casually
*I have left some stuff behind, while i hardly buy expensive clothing (most of it is from local surf shops- think volcom, rvca, quiksilver, billabong, etc.- and kohls, target, jc Penney, marshalls etc) it all looks nice and I wear everything I packed often.
*I work out usually 4-6 times a week so I need gym clothes which includes part of the shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts
* I'm going to school in my home state of CA on the coast, and need warmer clothes for mornings/nights and then tshirts and shorts for the day, almost everyday, year-round.

So what I'm curious to know is if it seems like it's more than I need possibly? What are other guys on here bringing?
And girls, how do you like college guys to dress, just curious?

just think about how nasty your dorm is gonna smell after 4 weeks of clothes (especially the workout clothes), how much laundry you’re gonna have to do, and if it’s even going to fit in your closet.

i like guys who look like they came out of a j.crew catalog. and i love skinny ties.

Sounds like a decent amount more than I had but it’s doable if you really need all of that. You may want to cut down on the number of t-shirts though, 40 t-shirts is a lot no matter who you are. Don’t forget as well that you are likely going to get more clothes in college as well, so you have to account for that. The way I dressed completely changed when I got into college and I was barely wearing a lot of the stuff that I came in with.

That looks excessive.

Do you really need 3 “heavier jackets” if it’s warm year-round? A heavy jacket in CA is probably different than what I would call a heavy jacket (WI), but still, one warm thing or even two should be enough. That’s a lot of sweatshirts and sweaters too. And shoes. And t-shirts.

It seems like you would want more shorts than jeans if you’re going to wear shorts year-round.

Got a raincoat? Umbrella? Unless it never rains they are good to have.

For comparison, me, a guy who doesn’t care as much about how he dresses, and runs/works out about as much as you:

These are all approximate, I don’t know exactly.

20+ boxers and socks, some compression shorts (gotta do laundry when these run out, and I might use 2 a day)
20 t-shirts
3 sweatshirts (I only wear these outside as a jacket)
raincoat (made sure to get one this year)
Winter Coat, gloves, hat, etc to bring later.
Stuff to run in winter
3 Jeans–could use more
4 sweatpants/athletic pants, mostly for running or morning class
8 cargo shorts
5 athletic shorts
dress pants, 2 dress shirts.
shoes: running, school, old, dress, basketball, so 4.

I did laundry about every 2 weeks in winter, 7-10 days in spring and fall (I rewear jeans a few times, not shorts usually)

^and yeah, 4 weeks of smelly clothes is going to stink up your room and make you the guy who takes up all the washing machines.

The “heavier” jackets arent really that heavy… Like they would not be good in the snow. More like they are just nice outerwear to have when it does get cold. Those are the only things I spent a decent amount of money on (around 70- 100 for each) and I wear them all the time when it gets cold at the beach, when going out, etc.

I think I will cut down on the shirts. I just bought a 7 white shirts for 5 dollars thing. So that may be why it seems like a lot. Haha I use those to work out. Quite a few of those shirts are for hanging out at home/ working out. About 20 are actually nice. And at least 3 of those sweatshirts and 3 of those are for working out.

I do laundry about once a week or so regardless of if I have more to wear. I definitely would make sure to wash work out clothes.

I don’t want to come off as some spoiled kid though, so I just want to say that I did pay for all (well about 90%) of this myself…

aqsewfqq: it hardly ever rains but I have an umbrella, yes. Haha thanks for reminding me! And thanks for your list. I have 5 pairs of casual shorts that I just wear all the time and wash every 2 wears. I’ll cut back on the rest a little haha

Anyone else have a list/ advice?

Not a metro…

Hmm, ok bro. Whatever you insist upon.

3 flip flops (1 for showe), 2 for athletics, one cheap slippers. If you consider 8 pairs of casual shoes, 4 pairs of which are $40 Vans and Converse, “metro”, then I guess so.
I take 15 minutes or less getting ready and own 1 shampoo, hence, not metro.

It’s always the ones that rush to claim they aren’t something that usually are.

Yes, 14 shoes sounds like a ton, but if it all fits, then who cares how many pairs you bring.

Geez. Okay I own 14 pairs of shoes.

I said I wasn’t metro to make the thread lighthearted and kinda funny. I just wanted people to know I’m not obsessed with looks or clothes, and that I’m not spoiled or very preppy. I only own 14 pairs and just packed them all, and I highly doubt most guys don’t own around the same amount (I know plenty with more).

Now that we’re past that… Anyone want to give any helpful advice?

There is a strange concept called sarcasm. And I thought having 8 pairs of shoes total was enough, most people I know had less. But hey, who cares? Bring as much as you want, but I’d suggest being prepared to send a little back, if possible, in case you cannot fit everything in the closet/dresser that is provided in the dorm room.

I have a bunch of shirts, so meh.
But 14 shoes? I had two closets since my roommate was kicked out, and I still had trouble managing like 6 pairs of shoes. Nothing against it, but make sure you have enough space to store everything.

Oh, and cargo shorts.

Have you given consideration to how much space you’ll have for clothes?

Vanechka: I don’t read sarcasm well, only speak it well :P

Yeah I think I’ll ditch some shoes. Haha

DavidSSabb94: Yep. The dorm closet is about half of my already small closet, and everything fits on just one side. And I have under-bed storage containers as well.

Any guys/girls have lists of what they bought just for comparison?

Don’t forget to leave a few pairs of shoes at home for when you go back to visit.

I have 11 pairs of sneakers but I only wear 6 of them in total, I can go for a whole week wearing the same one’s lol. My favorite one’s, which I bought I 2008, now squeak when I walk. I’m gonna have to buy them again. I love them, they re Air Max 1. I remember I had some black New Balance 574 which I wore a lot too, i’ll have to buy those again too. I also have a pair of Hush Puppies. I have two pairs of Converse which I do use, and 4 Jordans which I only wear two of them but even those 2 rarely.

I wear Levi’s jeans. Shirts: Hanes…they’re cheap and comfortable, and have no brand on them or anything. I also have a bunch of Novelty t-shirts.

I can tell you what I’m bringing though this could change since I haven’t started school yet. I’ve packed:

25 Button Downs
15 Polos
10 brand name tshirts (Polo RL, Brooks Beothers, Lacoste, etc.)
5 Khakis
5 Different Color Chinos
7 Shorts
4 Shoes (Two Sperry’s, Loafers, Wingtip Dress Shoes)
2 Jackets (Patgonia 1/4 Zip and a raincoat from Columbia)
3 Gym Shorts
5 Tshirts to work out in
A blazer

And of course underwear, undershirts and socks. I think I had them pack about a months worth of these even though I’ll be doing laundry at least weekly.

Keep in mind that I do dress fairly preppy (by most people’s standards) and do try to alway look nice if I’m going to be in public so what I need is probably different from what you need.

I did this because you asked for something to compare to do I hope it helped!

My list is:
About 20 T-shirts
10 Pairs of casual shorts (khaki, cargo, etc.)
5 pairs of jeans (will leave some shorts at home over Thanksgiving break to bring more jeans)
5 pairs of athletic shorts
3 button-down shirts
A pair of khakis
A thick windbreaker
A thinner rain jacket.
About 4 pajama bottoms
One complete suit (including shirt and matching pants, don’t know whether or not I actually need this for a presentation or something)
2 pairs of tennis shoes (1 new, 1 a lot more worn out)
Hiking/snow boots
Flip-flops
Sperrys
Dress shoes.
Various pairs of socks and boxers, don’t have an exact count

I thought THAT was too many clothes. I hope it fits, otherwise I’ll be sending some stuff back with my family

^^ Costa: That’s 50 shirts, 55 with the workout ones. Leave home some of those that you don’t wear as much.

If you’re doing laundry weekly, why bring 4+ weeks of clothes? Even if you end up not doing that, 4 weeks is still only 30 days.

The rest looks fine. workout shoes?

wow…in my opinion that’s a lot of clothes. It’s probably a good idea if you plan to do laundry every 2-3weeks…because with that amount you could.
I didn’t take much to college, because I plan on doing my laundry every saturday/sunday if possible, so you basically need enough clothing to survive a week.
