I will be graduating with a Bachelors in Music this upcoming Spring. I have researched about consulting jobs and have found it to be a career I want to pursue rather than music. I want to end up working for a company like Deloitte in the future. Because I did not major in a business related degree program, I know that I am at a disadvantage and would like to know how I can start pursuing my dream career. Is there any advice any of you could give me?

I also researched MBA programs and many prefer the applicant to possess work experience in a related field. How do I go about getting this experience from a job or internship without a business degree?

I won’t sugar coat it. You are going to have a very, very difficult time with your music major. You need to get great finance and business experience, show leadership, do well on the GMAT and get into a great business school to have any chance at this point.

You don’t have to go to a top college to work for those firms, but you do need some kind of educational or work background they want. And music isn’t it… majors in business, economics, and computer science are probably the most desirable to those companies. At this point your best route may be to get an MBA. It doesn’t have to be from a top college, but a decent 2nd tier school at least would be good. Normally I would advise people that they do not need an MBA to get a job with one of the large consulting firms (I worked for one for about 10 years, so have an idea of what is involved in recruiting), but if you don’t at least have an undergrad minor in one of those areas, you don’t have much of a chance of getting hired now.

You necessarily don’t need a business degree in order to work on a business consulting company. You should shed off those kind of misconceptions.I’m currently working on a [Toronto based business consulting company](Advisory).I had my graduation in Botany. But somehow i became an intern of a small consulting company. After gaining experience from there, i switched to his new company.

You may want to check out www.getgradjob.com if you haven’t already. They have a front to end guide on getting experience with firms like Deloitte and PwC in particular. It helped me land my first relevant experience gig at Deloitte in consulting.
